Spike of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and William de Nogaret of “Knightfall” - Eng & Ita Comparison
These two characters of two different series I love have actually many things in common. First of all, the same name: William (William Pratt and William de Nogaret); as second thing, we could say they are both badasses “apparently” without a soul. Spike is a vampire that manages to feel love and, moreover, for his worst enemy: the slayer Buffy, while de Nogaret is King Philip’s adviser at the Court of France and loves his niece Isabella, a not-so-moral kind of love. Both wrong situations which make them do wrong things for selfishness and personal interest, because Spike, blinded by desire and lust, in a moment tries to rape Buffy, but doesn’t succeed; de Nogaret spies Isabella from a secret room and sees her losing her verginity with the Prince of Catalonia before wedding, so he makes sure the marriage is compromised (most of all because he believes she deserves better, like England), but she ends up in a sudden and embarassing situation he never wanted her to be in.
Spike has a (sexual) relationship with Buffy and after the rape attempt leaves Sunnydale to fight and get back his soul for her. Then he returns and gets slowly close to her again, in a total different way, which will lead him to hear her “I love you” at the end of the series. De Nogaret, on the contrary, keeps loving his Princess in silence and helps her to get rid of Prince Louis by poisoning himself; nothing happens between them except hugs and kisses on the cheek (who love them like me will have to wait and hope for more in season 2).
The third thing in common is that they are allergic to religion: Spike as a vampire and de Nogaret as a non-believer whose father was brutally burned (I believe by Church, but it isn’t said, because both parents in History were burned as Cathars).
Questi due personaggi di due diverse serie che adoro in realtà hanno varie cose in comune. Prima fra tutte, lo stesso nome: William (William Pratt e William de Nogaret); come seconda cosa potremmo dire che sono entrambi dei duri apparentemente senz’anima. Spike è un vampiro che riesce a provare amore e, per giunta, per il suo peggior nemico: la cacciatrice Buffy, mentre de Nogaret è il consigliere di Re Filippo alla Corte di Francia e ama sua nipote Isabella, un amore non esattamente morale. Entrambe situazioni sbagliate che li portano a commettere errori dovuti all’egoismo e all’interesse personale, perché Spike, accecato dal desiderio e dalla lussuria, in un momento cerca di violentare Buffy, ma non vi riesce; de Nogaret spia Isabella da una stanza segreta e la vede perdere la verginità con il Principe della Catalonia prima del matrimonio, quindi si assicura che le nozze vengano compromesse (soprattutto perché crede che lei meriti di meglio, come l’Inghilterra), ma Isabella finisce in una situazione inaspettata e imbarazzante in cui lui non avrebbe mai voluto che finisse.
Spike ha una relazione (sessuale) con Buffy e, dopo il tentativo di stupro, lascia Sunnydale per combattere e riprendersi l’anima per lei. Poi fa ritorno e, piano piano, le si riavvicina in un modo completamente diverso, che lo porterà a sentirsi dire “io ti amo” alla fine della serie. De Nogaret, al contrario, continua ad amare la sua Principessa in silenzio e l’aiuta a liberarsi del Principe Louis avvelenandosi; nulla accade fra loro se non abbracci e baci sulla guancia (chi li ama come me dovrà aspettare e sperare per la seconda stagione).
La terza cosa in comune è che sono “allergici” alla religione: Spike in quanto vampiro e de Nogaret in quanto non credente a cui è stato bruciato brutalmente il padre (immagino dalla Chiesa, ma non viene detto, perché nella storia entrambi i genitori sono stati bruciati come catari).
