So as I mentioned in one of my reviews lately, I recently was in Amsterdam where I went to the cinema twice, in two different cinemas. So here's a little review of them, if you would ever find yourself in Amsterdam.
First: Pathé Tuschinski, close to the Rembrandtplein
This was our first movie night. We had passed the cinema several times with the tram and decided that this was the moment to step in.
This cinema is part of a big commercial chain of cinemas. However, it only has six rooms, so it isn't the biggest one out there (I assume, commercial cinemas here have around 12 rooms, so I'm guessing the Dutch ones aren't that different). When we walked in we were immediately impressed by the interior, it's very retro and feels very welcoming. The staff itself was also very friendly. We had to buy our tickets at the bar, which we thought was very funny, but also quite practical, because you could order your drinks at the same time.
We had to wait a while before we could enter the room because they still were cleaning it. The room itself was very cosy, it was one of the smallest rooms in the cinema, which was really nice, because it meant that the screen itself was also smaller. I have nothing against big screens that make you feel like you're being sucked into the movie, but my eyes seem to like smaller screens better, they adjust to it faster. The seats were very cosy and there was an insane amount of leg room. I couldn't even touch the seat in front of me if I stretched my legs. The only criticism I can think of is that the numbers of the rows go down instead of up. So row 1 is at the very top of the room, which was something that confused us a bit. Because we were at row 5, we were looking at the rows at the bottom, which surprised us, because we were there pretty early and we thought we had good seats, which we had when we found out the different system.
Overall, very nice cinema, basic price (10,50 euros per person), comfortable seats and good quality screen and sound.
Second: Filmtheater De Uitkijk, Prinsengracht
De Uitkijk is supposed to be the oldest cinema of the Netherlands. I don't know if that's true but it could definitely be the most charming one. It's tiny, just one room where they show 2 to 3 different movies a day. The room has 2 floors: on the ground floor there are just normal rows of seats, but on the first floor there are charming little tables which create an amazing atmosphere I've never experienced in any other cinema. You feel completely relaxed, almost at home.
When you enter the cinema, you enter the little foyer where there are a few small tables to have a drink. The drinks are ridiculously cheap for a cinema and they even have a small collection of very good beers (Vedett, La Chouffe and Leffe. We were very happily surprised by that.) They also have a small variety of snacks such as M&M's, but also Leonidas chocolates. Basically, I felt completely at home.
The staff were very friendly (and just happened to be really attractive, which is always a bonus) and the prices were pretty normal (9 euros, 8 for students).
Because this is a smaller cinema, they can't choose the same movies as big commercial cinemas, so they go for the more alternative path. For example, for this month some of the movies that are shown are Much Ado About Nothing, Blue Jasmine and Avant l'Hiver.
Despite it being a small cinema, the viewing experience was as great as the one in Pathé, but with more atmosphere. If I lived in Amsterdam, I would visit this cinema with every chance I got.
