Review: Dead Luke - God Takes LSD
By Zac Camagna
Dead Luke has come a long way since making a few weird little synth-pop singles for labels like Sacred Bones and Sweet Rot. These days, instead of those little one-off releases, Dead Luke leaves us with something bigger and with much more detail. Ever since his debut American Haircut, we’ve been able to look to this Midwestern-based mastermind for immersive compositional outputs that come off more like a spiritual journey than just listening to any old record.
Last year’s Meanwhile…In the Midwest was without a doubt the next step up from American Haircut. Now, God Takes LSD seems to capitalize on those ideas, with Dead Luke even revisiting a couple tracks like “God of Nothing (Reprise)” and “(Baby) Bring It Home (Come Down Version)”. Aside from those, the cassette still offers over thirty minutes of new material, with tracks ranging from moody, bluesy psych-outs to intensely kaleidoscopic with layered electronic textures like “Jesus Fucking Christ” and “And On the Eighth Day, God Took LSD.”
One of those bluesy burners comes in “Bad Little Woman”, a gritty live recording of a song by the Wheels from 1966. It’s all so colorfully murky, it’s like you’re seeing through the puddles of gasoline on your driveway. Start this trip right by tuning in below. Then snag the cassette from Moon Glyph.

God Takes LSD - Dead Luke
"Drugs are bad, m'kaay?"
