Christmas Advent Marathon #5
Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
Director: Charles Sellier
All right, so we’re getting into more Christmas specific movies, but still traversing the horror genre. In this movie a young boy named Billy is with his parents visiting his non-responsive grandfather in a mental hospital. While alone the Grandfather tells Billy that Santa comes to punish kids who have been naughty. What a nice guy. Later that night Billy watches as his parents are gunned down by a man in a Santa suit. I’m sure that won’t affect him later in life.
Fast forward through some awkward years where Billy is drawing pictures of Santa killing people and punches the man dressed as Santa that comes to visit the orphanage he lives in, now Billy is eighteen and working at a toy store. On Christmas Eve he’s forced to put on the Santa suit, snaps, and goes on a killing spree punishing all the naughty people.
That’s a decent recap. There are some pretty gruesome deaths as only an 80’s Slasher Flick can produce, and Billy is surprisingly handy with an axe. If I’ve been naughty I think I’d rather just take the coal.
(I should also mention that the image I used for Black Christmas, of Santa bringing the axe down the chimney, should actually be attributed to this film...sorry.)
