I wasn't sure how to talk about this, or if I should at all. I try to keep the positivity of being Deaf on this page. But yesterday, well I was out and about on my own. I do this all the time. I am very independent. I had to stop and get gas. I only had a little bit in cash left since it is the end of the month and I only get paid once. (On the first) I went inside to pay in cash. I kept seven dollars with me as emergency money over the next few days. I went back out to the pump and started everything. It was normal. Until I turned around, there was a man, looming over me. I am only 5 ft tall and I look female. He was over 6ft. He has positioned himself so I was against the gas pump and I couldn't get out. My muscular degenerative disease means that I can't fight back against anyone. I don't have strength to. He was talking to me. He kept pointing at his car and when I didn't respond he grew increasingly agitated. I eventually just started going "I can't understand you!" He grew more and more frustrated and was jerking his arms around in what appeared to be a violent manner. He pressed closer to me and I tried to call for help but no one seemed to care. Eventually I pulled my last $7 out of my pocket and said, "here! If I give you this will you leave me alone? It is all I have!" He immediatly brightened up and took my money before he left. I immediatly left, shaken and in tears.
I can't help but to think, if I had been hearing, would I have known he was following ne? Could I have prevented allowing my self to get into this situation? I don't know what he was saying or what he really wanted. I just assumed it was money. I have no choice but to face the reality, I am an easy target. Easy to sneak up on. Even though I am diligent! I trained specifically for shit like this at the Deaf schools I went to. They warn you to watch, to always be careful. Let your eyes be your ears. But I still messed up. I was physically uninjured, but if I had continued to refuse? Would I have been? I can't promise that. No one can. Maybe he would have just left eventually. Maybe he saw me shove my precious seven dollars back in my pocket.
The money isn't the big deal. It is almost the first. But that terror, I don't know when I will feel safe enough to leave my house alone again. And how is that fair? It isn't. This is a real problem that I am many others who have hearing loss have to weigh and consider every time we leave the house. (And others with disabilities)
I am very shaken up by the experience.
