#bookreview of Deaf Sentence by David Lodge. I was SO intrigued by this premise.... a misunderstanding arising from a hearing problem causes a retired linguistics professor to agree to help a mysterious young student on her PhD about suicide notes... that's such an interesting idea 🤔 but I felt let down by this book. I like fast paced plots and indepth character studies but this book felt like a mash up of both of those, which put me off a bit. There are definitely some funny and endearing moments in this book but the switching between first and third person was done at odd times. I also felt a bit disconnected from this main character as Desmond is a privileged (and sometimes quite snooty) old man, however I did learn a lot about what it's like to live with hearing loss. Overall, I think it tried to do too many things and therefore didn't really go anywhere. Seaway- Colour Blind 8/23/15

With the emo revival becoming bigger in the scene, pop punk has been trying to put a similar edge into it’s styling. But Seaway decided to screw that and show us a fun album that makes someone feel good and ready to dance mosh. Their second album is not an existential masterpiece and it does not show a huge complexity to their lyrics but they offer a different vibe. Seaway has songs about girls, the gotta get outta of this town themes, and covers the basic pop punk checklist. As simple as it seems, Seaway is not trying to emphasize on it’s state of mind or lack thereof and that is making the difference.With songs that are catchy and put any frown upside down, they seem to undermine the sad wave. Favorite tunes were Best Mistake and Still Weird.

PWR BTTM - Ugly Cherries 9-19-15

This duo is sending the music scene up in flames with their progressive forms and settings set with a rock background. Their uncanny sense of self has developed a much needed community that seems to be the evolution of what Bowie first began. Their revolutionary stance on trans rock is seen throughout their gender neutral album. As well as it has had an impact even on public radio with NPR (National Public Radio) writing some great reviews on them (link at the bttm). Their latest and only album Ugly Cherries is phenomenal. It is grand with guitar solos and dance electronica as well as destroys the barriers of conventional lyricism with it’s gender fluidity. Ugly Cherries the song itself holds the best rock element while Dairy Queen with it’s simplistic lyrics shows off an upbeat, easy to groove indie vibe. Favorite songs off the album were I Wanna Boi and All The Boys.

Free Throw- Those Days Are Gone 9/16/14

A fresh band that shows so much potential. This record has some put it on repeat and cry yourself to sleep because of an ex from three years ago, songs. Two Beers In is by far my favorite that I can put on repeat and get in my feels. Although they seem unstoppable, when you take a closer look at the lyrics it shows the newness of the band and the age old rule of not writing an entire album solely on a girl. All together this album deserves a listen through, especially if you’re still salty about an ex.

Matt Corby- Telluric 3/11/16

Never have hearing this artist before and this not being in my normal genre, I took my time to really listen through his albums and chose Telluric, mostly because I dug the majority of these songs and this album made me want to bob my head for almost the entire time. He could belong in a 50’s night as well as a festival scenario. His trippy take on certain songs such as Do You No Harm is perfectly matched with a blunt and a hypnotist. On the other hand, some songs carry such a distinct old school vibe and soul, like the song Monday, that I can’t help but to dig the subtle differences he uses to create this cool, swanky album.

Microwave-Stovall 9/23/14

A band that I have heard little from but so much about. They seem to be another new band that is making a come up in the indie pop-punk circles. They come out banging in the first song Stovall and refuse to let up. I love the prose they use to tell their tale. It’s innovative being paired with an indie new-wave sound that I have yet to be this impressed lyrically and musically. Work it Out seems to be least lyrically driven in my opinion compared to the dynamic lineup of the rest of the album. Microwave sets up their songs with a unique frame that is more based around the story behind the song, which I am glad to say is not an entire album about a girl. Favorite song Trash Stains because of two lines, “Quik-Mart raised the prices on all my favorite vices” and the bombshell “But all I've got is the black gel bracelets my goth friends gave to me. I wove 'em in a 69 so at least you'd know I'm clever and sexual”.

Seahaven-Winter Forever 8/8/11

Seahaven’s first record is one of my all time favorite, even so I can admit the biggies that make me somewhat cringe when I hear them. PV is the weakest in my opinion maybe because it’s the last song and I lost patience but most likely because it’s right behind Honey Bee. Although the first listen through I was a Honey Bee fangirl, but it soon left because of how hard Kyle Soto was trying to make a low-fi, sad song that everyone could relate to; even then Honey Bee has some of my favorite lyrics of the album, although I have to look up the lyrics because it’s hard to hear his enunciations with 'Cause God grew too tired to fix the mistakes he made with Love“. Despite these two, the album should be put on repeat and let the wave of each song hit you. Favorites of the album are Slow Down and Black & White.
