Thank you for the welcome. Everyone has been so kind. Now, as far as your rather bold question, I find it difficult to narrow the kind things His Lordship has done down to simply three things. You have to understand, when two people have been married for as long as Lord Grantham and I, narrowing down anything to a list of three is nearly impossible! But I so hate to be a disappointment. I hope you'll accept three nice things His Lordship does regularly instead.

First, Lord Grantham saves little items from his morning papers he knows I'll enjoy. He'll sometimes bring them up himself after his breakfast, or he'll leave them in my sitting room for when I work on the morning post.

Second, though he may try to deny it, he enjoys all manner of surprises. It isn't unlike him to bring home a package of sweets from York or Ripon. It also isn't unlike him to send an unexpected telegram when he's in London, only to say hello.

Third, and perhaps most dear to me, is Lord Grantham's willingness to be uncomfortable for my sake. It's a little embarrassing to give specific details regarding this, but please know that he can be such a selfless man.

Goodness! Now I'm blushing. I hope my response to your question will do. Lord Grantham and I both appreciate your affection for our marriage.

Your question isn't a prying question at all! On the contrary, I appreciate the flood of happy memories it inspires. Thank you.

I hope I'm assuming correctly that you do mean since Lord Grantham and I have been married, not our courtship. To be honest, memories from our courtship are a bit foggy. Everything happened so quickly!

If you do mean since we've been married, one of my favorite early memories with Lord Grantham is from our first London Season together. His Lordship gave me a new tiara with beautiful pearls and diamonds to mark the occasion. He came into my room at Grantham House just as I was about to go down, and my insistence to change the tiara I wore to the new one made us late. The late Lady Grantham was displeased, but I didn't mind.

What a lovely memory --- a warm night in June, a great deal of dancing, and quite a lot of laughter.

To answer your question, I must tell you a story. You'll excuse my old lady's memory, I hope.

At the end of my first Season in London, I was pleased when Lord Downton, as he was styled then, invited my mother and I to Downton for a house party. Of course, at this point in our courtship, Mother and I had some inkling why I had been invited, and while I liked His Lordship a great deal at the time, I wasn't sure if I loved him. You'll have to understand that I was quite young, and while I certainly thought him kind and rather handsome, I was content to accept him based on friendship alone.

But then there was a moment when his late father was meeting with one of the tenants. I'm not sure I remember what'd happened to warrant the interruption of the house party, but I do recall Lord Downton becoming quite concerned. And then the next morning, when I went down to breakfast, Lord Downton wasn't there. He'd walked to the farm to look after the tenant. Later that afternoon, just before tea, we took a walk together. He said to me that he loved Downton. When I agreed that it was very beautiful, he responded that yes, the house was beautiful, but Downton was much more than a house.

I'm sure you won't find this at all very romantic, and I'm sorry that I can't quite explain why, but it was that which made me realize that I loved him. And have since.

robert, we’ve been awake too long to make this sound pretty. they’ve been pining too long to make this look pretty. it’s been too much too long to make this anything but itself. robert, it isn’t pretty -- but then again, when is it ever when it’s us? i don’t think we’re meant for pretty. i don’t think we’re meant for cute and easy, for shy smiles and soft lips. they want us to be but the pieces just don’t connect. we sent soft away years ago and it’s too much too late to try and grab it back. robert, i’m not sure what i provide. i’m not sure there’s anything anyone can look at that won’t riddle them with dread. their gifts are like poisoned barbs that fall out of our mouth and into your laps but you insist there’s something good, so take it. take this barbed wire and wear it like a necklace; show off your spoils of war because i don’t know what i’m to do with it.

robert, here’s a playlist they made for you. they thought and they tried and you were on their mind the entire time. perhaps it isn’t good, but it’s something.

i hope this doesn’t wildly ruin your perception of us.
