It’s so bizarre how often in Western media - as soon as something is animated - it’s automatically considered childish, family-friendly, less complex, smaller standards, less artistic, etc. Orrrrrr, it’s an intentionally edgy adult show which rebelliously “strikes” against the notion of family friendly animation. And because it’s being intentionally edgy and rebelling against family friendly animation, it doesn’t reap up all the powers that storytelling can do, either. It’s just... throwing in non-child-friendly things for the sake of being non-child-friendly.
And then. Then I see people marvel in shocked wonder about how [x] show is raising the bar that, “Whoa, animation CAN have complex storylines and emotions!” Like... of course it can. This shouldn’t need to be proved. This shouldn’t be an epiphany. This shouldn’t be a novel concept. There are lots of different mediums to tell stories, but changing mediums doesn’t automatically throw the concepts of how to write narratives out the window. Complexity in narrative can occur anywhere. Same thing with like... visual arts. I can draw something with a lot of skill, talent, and artistry with pastels... or I can paint with acrylics... but the notions of art and skill and talent and complexity don’t just magically vanish when I switch from pastels to acrylics. Of fucking damned COURSE you can have animation that’s complex. Like what the hell. Animating something doesn’t automatically turn off show writers’ brain cells when they’re coming up with story. Why are you surprised at this concept.
But because we’ve gotten SO INGRAINED into the idea that animation = childish, we limit ourselves in a ridiculous area that shouldn’t need conquering. I’m ALL for more complex, emotional, powerful, meaningful narratives in animation. Animation is my jam. I adore it. I want it to be utilized to full effect as a medium. This is just such a fucking ridiculous thing to overcome that we never should have had to overcome. Because we got this fucking ridiculous idea that animation CAN’T be complex simply because it’s ANIMATION. And that’s so bizarre and ridiculous to me. And we’ve already proven it can be a great storytelling medium... both in this culture and elsewhere... but lots of people just don’t grasp the fact because it’s ANIMATION. Something like ATLA is way beyond the emotional depth, sophistication, and power of maaaaaany live action “adult” shows. And yet the shows and stories that already ARE complex, deep, powerful, and artistic as fuck... are often not recognized as being such with the same level of appreciation for live action. And many other shows and stories are limited unnecessarily simply because we can’t comprehend that when something is drawn, it can still be drawn to a good story.
We’re getting better. We’re getting better. I know we’re getting better. But the fact I still keep on running into these notions in person or online with people about animation (I was reading reviews, if you’re wondering where this rant comes from)... just makes me shake my head. This whole false correlation that animation automatically = unsophisticated, childish, etc. is out of this world BIZARRE.
OKAY SO I JUST FOUND THE MOST HILARIOUS FANFIC DRAFT IN MY NOTEBOOK AND I DON’T EVEN REMEMBER WRITING IT I AM CRINGING SO MUCH
3, 7, 26.
Astrid’s locker door still wouldn’t open. She kicked it in frustration. Unlike the movies, the locker did not magically open. She gritted her teeth and prayed to the gods before entering her combination one more time.
3, 7, 26.
Nothing happened.
If the locker was a human, it would be crying very loudly by now because of all the kicks it got. The locker could die for all she cared.
“Bruh.” (bRUH I’M SCREAMING WHY OH WHY DID I WRITE THAT)
She closed her eyes. “What do you want, Ruff?”
Ruffnut Thorston’s smirking face was not welcome at all. Her locker would not open, and she was not in the mood to carry out whatever crazy, stupid scheme Ruff, her brother, and his pet chicken had cooked up.
“Locker problems?” her retarded best friend asked. (I’M CRYING I’M SO SORRY GUYS I WAS LIKE THIS AT ONE POINT)
“No, I just like standing around and kicking it for no reason.”
Ruff blinked once, then twice. “Well, that’s weird.”
The girl exploded.
“Yes I have locker problems you dimwit! This stupid thing won’t open! You do it for the love of Thor!” (Past me: “THEY MUST USE THOR AND ODIN IN EVERY SENTENCE THEY USE!”)
“Alright, Ast, whatever you say,” Ruff responded in a sing-song voice. She stepped forwards, leaned down, and in thirty seconds Astrid’s locker was open.
Astrid gaped and her arms fell limply to her sides. “How did - what - how did you do that?”
Her friend leaned in close, as though to tell a secret, and whispered, “Illuminati magic.”
She punched her shoulder. Hard.
“You twit. Tell me what you did.”
Rubbing her arm and scowling, Ruff said, “I entered the combination, genius. I know it, remember? You told me.”
“But that doesn’t make sense,” Astrid argued, as she got her books out, “I must’ve tried a thousand times. And, Odin help me, do not start singing ‘Hello’ because then I will dig your grave a thousand time.” (Back when I thought Astrid was cool and didn’t realize she was a giant dork.)
“Oh yeah?” Ruffnut challenged. “Alright. Enter your combination, Ms. Perfect. If it works, then I will scream ‘Hello’ into your ear. Don’t diss Adele.”
AND THAT’S IT IT ENDS RIGHT THERE. I THINK THE PLOT WAS GOING TO BE THAT ASTRID WAS ENTERING HICCUP’S LOCKER COMBO BY MISTAKE BECAUSE SHE’S SO USED TO IT. HOLY HELL, MY WRITING SUCKED IN THE BEGINNING OF 2016. THAT WASN’T SO LONG AGO. OH MAN.
Why the fucking fuck is it so hard to find blogs in some fandoms that post just positive content? More likely it’s going to be a blog liking one branch of the franchise and then shitting or being overtly critical on the rest.
Of course it’s important for us humans to be able to not only react well to criticism, but to understand and think through it, whether or not we ultimately end up agreeing with it. Avoiding information just because it doesn’t jive with our emotions is dangerous of us to do. And we all have a right to post whatever we want on our own blogs. I know all that. But I’m on this fucking website just to have some fucking fun with television shows and animated fictional people. This is my recreation zone and that’s all I want to do with tumblr myself. Have fun. Doesn’t anyone else feel the same? I’m not here to listen to people salt about a show or a movie or a book that came out ten years ago. I just want to chill with blogs that are also posting positive content about good fandom material. I just want blogs where people can be like, “You’re in this fandom? I’m in this fandom too. I like this one part of the fandom. Yay!”
And yes I know this post is major salt itself. Forgive me. Let me have this one time vent. Dear Thor.
Is it just me, or is it that whenever I’m in a work space with other teammates on a project, we’re all trying to elevate ourselves with as much technical jargon as possible to make it look like we definitely “deserve” to be on this team?
......or am I the only one doing this self-consciously, and everyone else is naturally yakking jargon without thought?
*bangs head on wall* I PUT A WARNING.
Discord is now an anarchy, apparently.
@ashleybenlove @whosthatgal I don't know if you guys have seen this yet - but I feel like it's the closest we'll get to our crossover (go to 2:38). I'm screaming.
