dear USamericans,
did you know there are more non-native speakers of english than there are native speakers?
there are only a handfull of natural languages like that in the world!
(natural as we're ignoring any constructed language such as esperanto or klingon as there are (virtually) no native speakers of those)
some others i could think of being french, latin, and swahili
us non-native english speakers actually outnumber you native speakers vastly! we make up 71.5% of the ca 1.2 billion english speakers world-wide!
so why am i telling you this?
i am telling you this because while you do make up nearly 77% of all native english speakers, you make up less that 27% of all english speakers (and that's counting non-native english speakers in the u.s. too, if you only counted native speakers, you'd be less than 22%)
so assuming that anyone who speaks english must be an american just like you is just not true. 71.5% aren't even native speakers, and even in native speakers there's a 23% chance you're speaking to someone who's not from the u.s.
73% of english speakers are not USamericans
so please stop assuming anyone who speaks english in a global place (yk like the internet) must be a local
we're all local, but we're not your local
time for some sonder cause hi! we all do live real lives, and we're all not from your country, many of us have never even been to your country (nor plan to go there), and we all really live in our countries which are really how we tell you they're like and how you hear they're like (so also using other countries as like scare story or something for yourselves and your country and your activism in a global place where people from said countries can see it? very insensitive and very rude and people have been telling you this, please stop)
so yeah im not sure if you just assume everyone's USamerican because we all speak english and many USamericans speak english and you just didn't know that there's over 860 million english speakers who aren't from the u.s. and that we outnumber you nearly 3 to 1, or if you didn't quite grasp that people in other countries exist and are also real people with real lives who really live differently from you, or if you had/have a different understanding problem altogether, but i hope i could clear some of that up!
sincerely, a non-native speaker
