COMMENCING EXECUTION: MAXIMUM BREAK... OF HIS BONES
Hakase finds himself surrounded by complete darkness – with the only thing preventing the snooker player from feeling blind being a bright light coming from... the ceiling? Hakase isn’t particularly sure. His expression remains smiley, but, should one were to look at him, they’d be able to see that his body found itself shaky and nervous, contrasting heavily with his apparently forced on smile.
He takes a few steps towards the light, placing a hand over his forehead when he gets close enough for the light to stain his eyes. What in the world is happening? His expression manages to keep itself happy, but it is now extremely clear he feels just the opposite, heavy nerve and distress. There is, simply put, absolutely nothing going on! This doesn’t strike him as an execution – it strikes him as totally boring! This was horrid! Nerve-wracking!
That’s when he hears it. A very familiar sound, neat and loud and sharp – it is the striking of a cue ball, the beginning of a match of the game he so dearly adored. Rumbling suddenly fills his surroundings, Hakase being terribly, terribly close to falling over. He tugs at the cuffs of his sleeves, but his posture tightens and grows far less shaky. Something is going to happen. It brings a sense of excitement to his spine.
Soon enough, the rumbling slows down, but the noise of rolling feels very close to him. Despite this, Hakase remains extremely close to the light, refusing to budge. Moving away in the face of danger would only bore him. There was no point, no point at all... That’s when the snooker ball falls, gigantic – far larger than Hakase. It’s scarlet shade stumbles towards the darkness. The snooker player realises he is in the pocket of a snooker table! How strange! Hakase merely moves a step away in order to escape death. To escape pain.
More balls begin to fall towards the darkness, towards Hakase. They repeat themselves in a pattern Hakase knows very well. Red, black, red, black... the initial steps to gaining a perfect score. Although he successfully manages to dodge the first couple of snooker balls, they soon begin to surround him, falling to him at a ridiculously quick pace. Hakase is not a fast person, he knows this, he typically ignores this, but now it is taking a horrid toll on him.
His agility is beginning to give out, and the snooker balls are beginning to strike his arms and legs, causing for bruises to appear amidst his body. His expression is turning into something much more awry – with the smile that had been plastered amongst his face turning into an expression that reeks of both concern and of pure frustration.
Red, black, red, black, red, black... Hakase knows that, soon enough, this combination would change. His feet and knees, weak and stained with bruises and blood, begin to give out. Hakase falls to his knees, the snooker player now panting and sweating. He looks towards the top of the pocket, towards the slight amount of light... and, slowly, surely, Hakase crawls towards it.
A couple of snooker balls have piled up on top of each other – and, quite surprisingly, it seems that no new snooker balls have appeared for quite a long time. Why not attempt to climb out? Why not cheat death?
He, with a devastating amount of effort, begins to stand up, placing his leg amongst the edge of one of the red snooker balls. Up he goes... his climbing is nothing more than lackluster, his expression unable to turn into his usual smile. The only thing that mattered right now is that he might be able to escape horrid discomfort, horrid negativity...
That’s when the noise, neat and loud and sharp, rings throughout Hakase’s ears. He shuts his eyes, allowing for his hands and feet to slip their grip on the snooker ball. Something seems to roll towards the pocket... and, sure enough, a snooker ball falls. This time – it’s yellow.
The game is coming to a close. Hakase, now lying flat on the floor, realises this. His eyes open for a moment, staring towards the yellow snooker ball. He looks up, realising he’s terribly close to the stain of light – terribly close to death.
The next ball, green, strikes Hakase’s necktie, beginning to tighten it. His breathing grows forced and muffled, and his body grows numb. Hakase, now, truly appears to be on the verge of death. There are stuffed up tears in his eyes. He feels nothing but pain, nothing but pain...
Brown, blue, pink... the next three snooker balls strike his back, hands, and chest, leaving him unable to think properly, unable to feel anything other than complete pain. It’s a feeling he isn’t very used to – one that he had a tendency to avoid. The game is so, so terribly close to finishing... in the back of his head, Hakase knows this, but the drowning amount of pain is more than enough for him to completely ignore that.
Finally – a final large snooker ball falls, this time black in shade. It falls towards his head. The cracking of bones and a loud gasp is heard – followed by absolute silence. Balls roll throughout the pocket, and Hakase lies on the floor, now nothing but a corpse.
“It’s a maximum break! 147 points!”
Hakase Ritsuo was a boy desperately afraid of negativity. In his mind, pain and discomfort and mourning were all things to be avoided. After all, if one can brush off awful feelings and keep smiling, why not do it? It might have made him appear cold, appear cruel... and, truly, he’d grown to genuinely be both of those things.
“A perfect score! Isn’t it incredible! What a fantastic game!”
He’d killed to avoid those feelings – of negativity, of pain, of mourning... he didn’t want a life where he’d be inconvenienced. He didn’t want a life where he couldn’t flee from negativity... it was a petty reason to kill, but, at the very least, it was a reason.
He died feeling nothing other than that – regret, pain, and sharp negativity.
One could say he deserved it.
Ritsuo Hakase, the Super High-School Level Snooker Player, has been executed.
