Another goodie from the past: these are death masks at @nhmla in the taxidermy department. They are plaster casts made from molds created at the time of death. They're used to provide reference for later use or research. Book five of the Dresden Files and they just keep getting better! DEATH MASKS by Jim Butcher, narrated by Jakes Marsters. So much is happening in this book that I don’t think I can even give a decent review. Lots of supernatural beings doing things that irritate other supernatural beings. Do People Die with Facial Expressions?

I wanted to know how someones body would look after death so I went looking for answers.

 The first thing I wanted to know was if people can die with expressions of terror on their face. Heres what I found:

- I’m sure people have died with all sorts of expressions on their faces, but from what I’ve seen, the facial muscles relax at death and only a hint of their final expression remains, if any, before they begin to stiffen into rigor mortis.

-To the best of my knowledge, if the body was moved and cleaned or prepared for/at the morgue the face would not freeze instantly. Rigormortis does not set in for several hours. Now, if a body had been left with the face in some odd position and remained that way long enough for rigor to set in, the face would be frozen in that position.

-I see dead people every day at work. And NONE of them has any expression on their face. Usually it looks like you would when you are asleep. I have seen people who have died in situations of terror when evidence at the scene reveals that they were aware of their impending deaths.If you have ‘resting bitch face’ when you are alive- you will have resting bitch face when you are dead.

Reflection

The consensus seems to be that when people die, their facial muscles relax and they die in their resting face. This made me think of death masks, as they are an imprint of someones face right after death. As seen in the picture, the man seems pretty peaceful. Yes, he probably wasn’t murdered but apparently cause of death does not affect facial expressions.
