Deathsingers are the closests things to Bards in Destiny, but y’all ain’t ready to have that discussion yet
If Deathsingers are usable by all, might I possibly create a Lifesinger too? I have this idea for a lore couple where the silver female is the deathsinger and the dark male (yet to find) is her counterpart and is a lifesinger
Of course, you are free to make any kind of variety of Song Magic!
Some I’ve come up with are:Bloomsingers: their lullabies make plants flourish and growSkysingers: use chants to control the weatherGemsingers: whistling tunes help them locate rare stones and precious metalsSoothesingers: can heal physical injuries with hymns
Can Coatls be deathsingers?
Yup, they would fall into the deaf/HoH category
similar premise is explored in the game destiny, where a few of the wizards are a special subset called Deathsingers. the one you encounter in the ‘Crota’s End’ Raid, you have to take out before the song reaches completion.
im-going-space:
fun fact, this is basically the exact permise of deathsingers in the game destiny.
The Deathsinger subset from Destiny share similarities in name and killing songs, but that’s about it. I honestly got the idea from banshees, the aztec death whistle, and sirens.
Also, Ir Halak and Ir Anûk (Oryx’s daughters) invented Deathsinging as a means to unravel reality and then re-weave it (hence their song titles being Hymn of Unraveling and Hymn of Weaving ) into Oryx’s Throne World so as to expand his power and influence.
My Sornieth Deathsingers are just necromancers who found a way to use song magic to raise the dead and to rip the souls out of the living. Song magic can be used for other things too but the Deathsingers are the most infamous.
Would deathsingers be able to pass as normal (or at least, normalish) (as in, have a friendly chat with your neighbor, no Sir there's nothing funky going on here) or would something give them away? Also: How can you tell when one is born? Do they cry and dragons start dropping left and right around them?
Deathsingers are made, not born. Anyone with the magic ability, ingenuity, and will to learn from forbidden texts can become a Deathsinger.
There are no definitive outward signs that mark Deathsingers. Becoming one does not change your physical appearance or alter your mentality. They can be normal citizens of society. Of course, there are always outliers.
Why would deathsingers fight? Is there a religious ruling? Would it just be personal?
The Deathsinger cult is not religious by nature. There certainly may be individuals who use religion as motivation/justification but the cult did not originate in religion. The Deathsinger cult is mainly a group of necromancers who wanted more power and ability and discovered a new means of magic to achieve that. I’m sure a talented magician could use this song magic for more positive uses. Imagine a Bloomsinger, a witch who uses her lullabies to make flowers bloom and plants grow!
Deathsingers would fight for reasons anyone else would have: power, jealousy, territory conflict, arguments, anger, etc. It’s just that their spats have much more collateral damage and thus they tend to stay away from each other. There isn’t a monthly Deathsinger meet up or newsletter. Usually, the only time they interact with one another is when a master is teaching their apprentice. Although Deathsinger families or tight knit covens aren’t unheard of either.
Are deathsingers immune to their own songs and the songs of other death singers? What brings about this immunity? Do they go deaf?
The weavers of the song are immune to its effects. They do not go deaf from their songs either. The immunity is just like a any other magic caster’s spells. It woudn’t make a lot of sense if your spell affected you too. Nobody would use magic!
However, this begs the question: what would happen if two Deathsingers battled?
The answer: the one with the stronger, louder song would overpower and quench the other’s song. Battles between Deathsingers are vicious. Not only does one fall in the end but their howling songs will unravel the life of any living thing in the area. Another reason they tend to stay far away from one another….
