What this kid did not realize was that he was not in his twenties anymore. Yet, John had once again agreed to follow him. He was so proud of his city. So proud to be a real New Yorker, the blood of the city that never sleeps running in his young veins.
“Come on, John. This is going to be fun.”, Joe had begged him. The older man had sighed but had resign.
“Bring me my hat, then.”, he had nodded. Joe had happily almost flew towards the coat rack to bring him his coat and hat, with a huge smile on his lips.
It was early February, but the weather was still cold. The streets of Manhattan were windy and often full of draughts. Yet, a little walk outside would surely not kill them. On the contrary, it would refresh their mind, just to be outside of Joe’s flat.
John had insisted anyways. He wanted a quiet walk in Central Park. Just the two of them, talking and randomly chatting. Joe being as usual very funny, never missing to make the older man laugh, one his favorite hobby.
This was one of his favorite hobby, since the other one was to stare at John’s features. The man was past fifty now, but still. Joe could not help but being admirative of his beauty and his stunning profile. Some would say love is blind, but Joe did not give a damn. He loved John. Deep inside his heart. It was not just a random crush. It was love. And he wanted to show him every single day he was having near him.
John was looking at the young man next to him, as the latter took his arm and put his head on his shoulder as they were slowly walking in the parc. He smiled at the sight of his face. Joe was beaming. Some would certainly would have been ashamed to walk next to him, but not Joe. He was proud as a peacock. John recalled it had been during one of this moment, when Joe was unashamedly and lovingly standing by his sides, that he too, had realized it was love, and not just some kind of impulse, a new challenge he had wanted to take before going to the other. Yes, it had been a huge risk. But now, looking back at the past and the events they had already been through, John clearly had no regrets. He loved Joe as well.
It was late afternoon and Joe’s stomach began to be quite noisy. How could he be always so hungry, John had no idea. And he was still thin as hell. How was it even possible? As a result, they slowly exited the parc to find something to eat. Obviously in the streets of Manhattan, this was not going to be hard.
They stopped at several street snacks, where Joe ate two hot dogs, one bretzel, churros, a bagel and a slice of pizza, while John would be slowly sipping his coffee. He was looking at Joe with a faint smile. He was so thankful and grateful happiness had been brought again in his life.
They were getting back home as the sun was slowly getting down. Joe was still pointing at some buildings or street names, explaining why they had a special meaning for him, or why this place was famous. It had been a while since he had not seen the lights of Times Square at dusk. It had rained a lot in the morning and even if the afternoon had been quite sunny, Joe was sure it would be still wet on the pavement, making the lights shine even more in this famous street.
And he was right. John had traveled a lot, but those little attentions from Joe always melted his heart even more. Yes, this was a very touristic place, but still, the color palette was really beautiful, the reflection creating all sorts of lights.
Joe then dragged him to several stores, and insisted on ending with the M&M’s shop. He wanted some more candies for they movie night. The shop was huge and if some would pretend they could not find what they wanted, they certainly were lying. The shelves were full of candies, and here again, a colorblind person would have been really sad. The spectre of tints was endless it seemed.
The young actor was happily helping himself, filling his second bag in a raw. He turned to John and came closer to him, with this little smirk on his lips. He gave him a bag and kissed him on his lips, without blushing, without a single ounce of shame.
“Help yourself, love. It’s on me.”, Joe told him. The musician was clearly not lacking of money either but those sweet thoughts, and the kiss obviously, never failed to make him love Joe even more. He followed him and took a few candies as well, guided by the very expert advice of the young man. They were laughing, minding their business, when a hostess interrupted them.
“Gentlemen, sorry to disturb you, but have you checked our Valentine’s day’s offers?”, she gently asked. “You can print the face of your lover on the candies, or even offer them a huge one, making sure to prove your love to that person.”. Her speech was ready and it seemed she would be repeating it all day long.
“Thank you.”, John tried to politely decline her offer.
“In our lower level, you may also notice our huge range of teddie bears and other goodies for this day full of love.”, she carried on.
Joe could see his lover was getting ill at ease so he, too, thanked the hostess and they proceeded to the checkout. He was fearing she would have killed the great mood they had been having all day.
They got out without a word, John sighing again, placing his hat properly on his head.
“She was just doing her job, love, don’t worry.”, Joe tried to reassure him.
“I know, but I don’t like this. Trying to make us buy stuff to say prove something.”, John replied rolling his eyes.
“This is the concept of Valentine’s day.”, Joe shrugged as they were heading to his apartment.
“Yeah. Bullshit if you want my point of view.”, the older man said. “Let me tell you, we’re not getting each other gifts for the 14th of February.”
“No gifts? Deal.”, Joe agreed, but John regretted his sentence at once. He could see Joe was quite happy to show his lover how much he loved him on this special occasion. Maybe it was not such a bad agreement. Maybe John could take this as an opportunity to surprise Joe himself. He would had to plan it all, though and make sure the young man would not stick his nose in his secret business.
Since Joe was very often around, but John took the opportunity of him having a meeting with his agent to plan it all. Food for a romantic meal, champagne, a little bit of kitshy decoration (including hearts balloons and a huge banner saying ‘I love you’), a box of chocolate, red roses (both unmissable), and two matching silver bracelet. John was not entirely sure about the last one, but he thought the shop would take them back if Joe did not like the idea.
On the D-day, as John had decided to call it, Joe had yet another appointment outside (was it destiny or what?) so the musician set up everything. Very carefully and meticulously, he decorated the whole place, the caterer delivered the food right on time. When he had finished, he looked around him, satisfied. Joe would certainly be surprised. The timing was again perfect since he heard Joe’s key in the lock.
“I’m home, love. You won’t believe what Lizzy told me when....”, he started to say, but stopped as he entered the decorated living room.
“Surprise !! Happy Valentine’s day.”, John quite awkwardly exclaimed.
“What? But John, you made a deal. You said you did not want to celebrate.”, Joe said, still looking at the decoration.
“I know, but.... I wanted.... I mean....”, he tried to explain, passing his hand in his hair. He came closer to him, taking his hands. “I love you, Joe. And if it is important for you, it’s important for me.”, he shrugged. He softly kissed him and came back to the table to take his present and offered it to Joe.
Joe kissed him back, “Thank you, love.”, and he opened it. His face illuminated when he discovered the bracelets.
“If you don’t like them, I’ve got the receipt, we can change it....”, John told him at once.
“Shut up and give me your arm, you fool.”, Joe replied as he placed the bracelet on his lover’s arms and then John did the same for him. The actor looked at his arm, beaming. He could not be happier.
“This is such a wonderful present, John, I love them. And I love you.”, he said kissing him again. “But now I look like an idiot since I don’t have a present for you.”, he carried on grimacing a little.
“Oh, sweetheart, you know I don’t mind. I don’t want a present. I don’t care really.”, John replied.
“Hum....”, he came closer to him, kissed his lobe and softly whispered in his ear. “Well, maybe after diner, I can show you how much I love you too. I think this could be a great compromise.”, he proposed, putting sweet kisses in his neck, making him loudly swallow.
“Or maybe dinner can wait?”, John replied, taking him closer, pressing his body against his.
