Proposal for watch model
I am very focused on fashion and motiongraphics and animation. Therefore the theme and overall idea for the concept of the project will include both aspects. When deciding on what fashion based product to design, I decided to aim for wearable technology, as that is what is currently trending mainstream. I also decided that it would be wise to design a product of which I am very familiar with. Personally I have a huge watch collection, therefore I decided to model and design my own branded watch.
I started off with researching a variety of different branded watches and specifically focused on how each brand added their personal touch to each design of their collections separating themselves from other competitive brands. I researched each brand, as getting an insight into the recent media sources of products with a similar reference/theme or genre helps to identify which media pieces are attracting the most viewings and making the most profit in some cases. Overall this helps identify what is trending within the industry targeted. Doing so would also help understand what is popular within a certain age group, identifying a certain type of audience. Social networking helps identify trends within the industry.
In order to define the audiences for this project, I will be using a range of different research methods to identify the age, gender, interests and social economic class of the specific audiences so that I have a target audience suitable for the watch I am producing.
For this project I intend on using mainly Auto Desk Maya to model the watch and surroundings, whilst occasionally using both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for the details and texturing. I will be using Illustrator to structure the layout and add guidelines. Photoshop will be used to add the details into position and help bring the watch to life; I then will use Photoshop to create the textures for the watchband and face as well as the box. In Photoshop I intend to mostly use the Magnetic and Polygonal Lasso tools and the Magic Wand tool to help texture and structure the layout on the face of the watch.
I will be using the 'Uses and Gratification Theory' as it is most commonly used to enable the viewer to obtain knowledge and information, both of which I am aiming to do with my ad for the watch. This theory in particular focuses on the audience’s emotions, pleasure and other certain moods. People use media like video games and movies for example to satisfy their emotional needs, for example a male plays a action game and whilst playing becomes very intense and for example if he loses he would start to get angry. Another example is if a female were watching romantic movie and began to cry at a sad scene. These are all emotions extracted from the media itself. These also are self-esteem needs. People use media to reassure their status, gain credibility and stabilization, which they may not have, in reality. Therefore with this add I will be aiming to gain a similar emotion from the audience watching. To do so I intend to create a eye catching, intense effect similar to some used within 'James Bonds' movies and adds, doing so will result in the viewer of the media feel like the watch is invisible in a sense and masculine, therefore they will feel the need to buy the watch, which overall is the whole adjective of the ad.
3D is used for many things, it allows you to produce and bring to life concepts near limitless potential. Nowadays there’s not a single movie that doesn't consist of a lot of 3D models and animation.
3D models have become very incredible due to the advanced computer technology. The characters, environments, props and overall scenes are all created in 3D programs enabling projects to produce an extraordinary experience for the player. Similarly 3D is used in advertising for products such as cars, watches, machinery etc.
I will be using the 'Geometric Theory' when modeling in Maya. Geometric theory of a 3D scene is all about correctly plotting the coordinates and joining them with paths and when it comes to modeling it’s about shapes. So you have to consider the properties of shapes themselves, such as vertices, edges, lines, faces, curves, polygons and mesh.
There are five main types of content that need to be taken into consideration when producing a media piece; imagery, text, colour theme and fonts and mode of address.
As the imagery will be the strong center point and attraction of the ad due to the 3D modeling, I decided to keep the text minimal and very simple. Due to this particular watch and ad being focused on men, I will be considering using very neutral colors such as black, white, gray, and maybe a hint of brown and beige. The font of the text will be very bold and the shatter of the box as well as the structure of the modeling will be very sharp, as I will be targeting men.
"Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy, but mysterious. But above all black says, I don't bother you, don’t bother me" - YOHJI YAMAMOTO. I agree with this statement completely. First rule of fashion for me is the colour black itself along with simplicity, as simplicity equals elegance with it being for a women or a men the simpler the outfit the better and nothing is more simple yet intense as the colour black.
