Demos Action Encouraged by Hillary Clinton’s Commitment to Debt-Free College
Washington, D.C. – In response to Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s remarks on college affordability with Sen. Sanders (D-VT), Tamara Draut, Vice President of Policy and Research at, Demos Action, the political arm of the progressive public policy organization, issued the following statement:
“We are pleased that the college affordability crisis has again taken center stage on the presidential campaign trail. Returning to an America in which debt is not required for a degree is essential for economic opportunity and upward mobility, and it will take bold investments to get us there.
“We are encouraged that today Hillary Clinton reaffirmed her commitment to a new federal-state partnership to reverse devastating state funding cuts and guarantee affordable college for everyone, regardless of race or class. Demos has been a leader in advancing debt-free college and we look forward to working with the next President to ensure that college affordable for the most racially diverse generation of students in American history.”

Since 2006, Demos has been a leader in advancing policy solutions to address the college debt crisis facing America’s students. After years of studying the trends in funding for higher education at the state level, Demos released a policy blueprint in 2014, titled The Affordable College Compact, under the leadership of Tamara Draut, Vice President of Policy and Research. For the first time, the compact outlined a detailed approach to achieve Debt-Free College through federal-state partnerships, with the goal of making public higher education more affordable for all students.
