The British Virgin Islands is set to establish a Decolonisation Commission later this year as part of plans to move towards constitutional reform. The plans were announced by Premier Natalio Wheatley at his State of the Territory address where he also confirmed that new constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom will begin in July. The negotiations are expected to be completed before the end of the year, in time for the planned new constitution next year. According to Wheatley, the proposed Commission would serve as a public education and engagement body which aims to deepen the understanding of constitutional changes and self-determination. “That is why government will establish the Virgin Islands Decolonisation Commission this year, helping strengthen public education, dialogue and awareness around constitutional development, political advancement and greater self-determination,” Wheatley said.
