✨Ignorance Breeds Evil✨mini zine piggybacking off my last zine Female Leaders in the African Diaspora I Wish I Had Learned About in School with details of my experience in higher education debunking the foundations of my early education firstly with the start of democracy in the US predating the founding fathers - beginning with the indigenous Haudenosaunee (a matrilineal/matriarchal society), the first church of Christianity being in Ethiopia predating the European Christian church dispelling the notion of Africa as the dark continent. The observable patterns of settler colonialism & oppression that include exile, criminalization (incarceration), & homogenization of Othered people (enslaved narratives in particular) all tying back to patriarchy, erasure, & white supremacy even when the narrative aligns or is crucial to ideals upheld in the Eurocentric narratives of history. The zine closes with the final straw of what inspired this zine - a book review of Ring Shout & reiterates the title nuance derived from Socrates quote, “There’s only one good, knowledge and one evil, ignorance.”⚡️The cover features the Haudenosaunee wapum belt as a symbol of contract & democracy above a personalized black revised Mount Rushmore - Mount Rushmore is another symbol of colonialism since the (Black Hills) mountains the men were carved on are sacred to indigenous people (Lakota Sioux), but nevertheless stolen & their people murdered. But its also is callback to the previous & current zine(s) inclusion of maroon communities that were often located in the mountains & were composed of Taino & African people & the Haitian saying, “beyond the mountains are more mountains,” in reference to adversity & resistance. 🦋The bottom features the original Mount Rushmore upside down - essentially challenging the notions of the ‘white man’s world’.

As a teacher, I think my favourite stupid thing that we’ve done in education is trying to make it “inclusive” ...

...because instead of saying “Hey, there are people of non-Eurocentric ethnicities and cultures taking our courses. We should make sure that our educational system supports all those from various backgrounds and teaching skills from many cultural perspectives,” they said “Hey, there are people of non-Eurocentric ethnicities and cultures taking our courses. Let’s change half the “white” names to names that are obviously not white, and say THAT is the same as culturally inclusive education while we still shove our colonized curriculum down their throats.”

Because what my Inuit students really need to understand this math program is to change some of the names to Xing. That will help them understand how important it is to learn this work about polynomials. It’s a super important skill to have when you live off the land and really need to learn basic survival skills 🙄

Honestly the fact that in Canada and the US Classics programs only focus on Greece and Rome (Maybe Egypt or Celtic history if your lucky) while finding information on the rest of the ancient world is basically finding a needle in a haystack astounds me. Like come f*cking on. What if I wanna learn it all from the very beginning?? You just gonna skip past the Indus vally civilization, the Persian empire, Mesopotamia, Nubia, the Incan people, the Iroqoui people, ancient India and China like that?? WHY CAN'T I EVEN NAME A GROUP FROM INDIA AND CHINA?? TWO OF THE BIGGEST AND RICHEST PLAYERS IN ANCHIENT HISTORY!! WHY ISN'T CLASSICS COVERING IT ALL?? DECOLONIZE CLASSICS SO WE CAN ALL LEARN ABOUT THESE OLDER CIVILIZATIONS AND PEOPLES CUZ I'M SICK OF "HISTORY" STARTING AFTER COLONIZATION!!
