This conversation about #DecolonizingAncestors feels very important to me over the last several years because when my grandmother transitioned the only way for me to continue in relationship with her was to know she was 1. Not dead. 2. Living again. 3. In deep relationship with the spirit on my behalf. 💙 That feels very 👀 from a Christian context because the #ChristianDemonicFilter won’t allow for this kind of language but “Angels” working on our behalf feels acceptable. Because the demonizing of ancestors takes ya out of right relationship with the spirit. The #OldTestament spends whole entire books talking about who begat who begat who. It was particularly important for them to know where they came from. Their lineage meant something. More than just pride. Christ was in the bloodline. For my ancestors... I was coming in their bloodline. I was prophesied and here I am. It matters where I came from and the idea that they are no more is not conscionable. 🙏🏾 So here I am in this Carolina water talking abt ancestors with other black women who are talking abt healing inside sacred spaces that we construct on our own... and it feels like I need to be more public in modeling what Ancestor reverence looks like because we do all kind of craziness to get Gods attention and won’t just start with a quick scan of calling out the names of those closed to us in the eternal, “Emma Jane, Bernice Gulley, Raven Johnson, Lydia Goode, #ErmiasAsghedom... and so many more.
