Dream Yourself Free 2022 Cohort Applications are open. www.ebonyjanice.com/dyf ---- Story: In 2019 I tweeted that I fear I will never get to do anything more than fight because my entire existence, as a black woman, is a deep investment in a revolution that seems to only be validated if it will kill me. A series of deep healing events, experiences, and revelations brought me to the language of "Dream Yourself Free." My archives are supreme though so I recently realized that I had used that language in a Facebook post as early as 2012. So Dreaming and Liberation have long been mutual and related on my revolution journey. I workshopped this discussion from March of 2019-December 2019 and all the early workshop participants agreed: "We didn't even know that there was language for how we felt about freedom that didn't have to take our lives." In 2020 I launched the first Dream Yourself Free cohort. We were going to be open to all women but a week into the launch I realized I was out of integrity with my actual dream and publicly asked the ww that had registered to donate their registration to women of color and then we went on to raise $90K in 30 days for the first cohort of 30+ women. In 2021 I stopped playing these games even more and got in deeper alignment with the vision and was clear that this program is for Black Women. We gave full scholarships to all participants and asked our community to contribute to the program to ensure we could pay our facilitators well. In 2022 we are doing the same thing. And the facilitators have ALL had dramatic and drastic life changes in the last 12 months that will make this particular cohort extra special. Hi! It’s me seeing myself in this moment. This is a moment that I won’t have to look back in a few years from now and realize that I was that b/that nga and somehow I missed it because of body dysmorphia. Yay me! Yay therapy! Yay to a heal/ing moment. Also yes, it is 8:20am CST and I’ve already been in the backyard hot tub in over the top swimwear! 🤭😏🤷🏾‍♀️ ——— Was texting with the homie this morning abt a recent therapy revelation someone posted on Twitter that we both resonated with and I thought, “THIS” is what I mean when I say, “Dreams as resistance” because when blk ppl/ Blk women/woc/POC have to do resistance work all the live long day we never get to settle in our bodies in these types of healing moments that other folks have as a given or a luxury. The decision to focus on ME as a whole, free, liberated person isn’t selfish... it is radical, revolutionary, and the balance of God! <- Sometimes God will hold your hand and step by step you. And sometimes God will fall back and see if you ready to run. I have been watching Harry Potter & live tweeting my experience for the last few days. #EbonyJaniceOutOfContext is some of my most hilarious work. Baby’s breath in my hair because #TalaniTaughtMe || But also... my locs have grown enough for two little pony tails and I am too pleased with the way they age me back! 🙊 I must tell you that even though I’m an advocate for #BlackGirlLuxury as my standard for living, this #SelfCare work is dark sometimes too. I have learned to moan and sob and cry and pout and tantrum and growl and groan and whimper for my life. The dark parts of my healing journey aren’t bad... it’s just balance. Both. The deeper I go into my softness journey the more I wish, for you, to have these keys. When I discovered the language of #Dreams as resistance I never could have imagined how drastically this journey of divesting from resistance work as we know it would change my world. I’m thinking of leading a small group of women and non men into this work. 👀 Are we ready for that kind of accountability and knowing? 👀 When people ask me what I’m dreaming (especially where liberation is concerned) I ALWAYS say, “I’m dreaming abt making love!” Because #BlackLove is actually my ONLY job. Loving my own black self heals. Loving my own black reflection (Blk women/femmes) heals. Loving a black man heals. Loving all blk ppl (regardless of their gender) heals. So I’m making love! And that’s all. And that’s it. And I’m pursuing this reality with abandon because this IS my activism. To be actually free... not just teaching, preaching, or hoping for it. To walk towards liberation and try it on daily. On Softness: Whew! (Full stop) I have been on this intentional “softness” journey for a little while now. Saying, “Black women aren’t just the mules of this world” and actively healing from my conditioning as a “mule of this world” is two different things. Softness ain’t just laying on my hood couch with my flower wall in the background either. Softness is feeeeeeeeling! 😬 Ewww! (sigh) And I learned this practice of naming my feelings from Thea Monyee by way of @tarabrach’s “Radical Acceptance” work. I just stop when something comes up that feels like it can’t just be grazed over and I lost my feelings. It may look something like this: I am feeling anxious, disappointed, frustrated, embarrassed, afraid, uncertain, confused, heavy, some anger, a tightness in my chest, a knot in my belly, my breath is shallow, the thickness of my breathing is strained, there are tears right at the edge of my eyes, I want to weep, I want to tantrum, and and and... And there’s actually nothing instagrammably magic about what happens after that. I just feel my feelings, accept that they are information and I don’t have to meaning make them any further... and then I move on (if I am able). And this is radical and revolutionary and righteous movement work because when your entire existence is historically linked to your production and labor for others... when has a Blk woman ever had time to just list her feelings and feel them and be held (even if the holding is just herself holding herself). (Slide 2) saw this article from 1918 on Le Twitter the other day and it reads that Blk women were refusing domestic work so the city passed an ordinance requiring them to have a job because we couldn’t find cooks, cleaners, or someone to raise their children. 😭😂 Unable to can. Honestly. I share this in this context because when I say Dreams (Healing) As Resistance Work — There’s theory to back it up when historically Blk women legit cld not choose to NOT! I saw this photo of Toni Morrison chilling in her apartment and it stirred something in me. Made me think of some of my other favorite photos of brilliant Blk women just chillin chillin minding their business. I’m in a major shift, for prob the last year or so... but daily I’m becoming. Who knows what but something. I think it’s good too! 🙏🏾🖤 These photos of Blk women doing nothing and being everything really speaks to where my work is pulling me. We gon’ see! —- I have built a business of being a smart black girl. It’s actually quite impressive. I have no regrets. But really... I just wanna live a life of ease and pleasure and play. I got the most amazing compliment today from my coach. It was our last session for a while (conversation for another day) and as we ran down the list of highlights from the last 4 years working together he said, “Here is my main highlight of our time together: I got married and coaching you helped me be a better friend and husband because I got to work with a strong woman who is also very sensitive & vulnerable and I realized I had taken that for granted in past relationships - and didn’t realize that I could play into treating strong Blk women like they are strong 24/7. My wife thanks you for this too, im sure!” This is epic because I have been sooooooo strong. And sooooooo in charge. And sooooooo focused on work and success and... all I really want is to be soft and witnessed. And as I’m doing this intentional work with my other coach (I give her many titles but basically we do ongoing work on vulnerability, softness, being a deep lover, a wild womanish soul, and a free girl). As I’m doing this work with her I feel sooooooo disappointed in things that don’t go my way along the journey. But to know that my journey to softness has been helpful in someone else’s life is just... amazing to me. Sometimes it’s hard to explain to people what I do. A lot of folk showed up for AntiRacism education - my focus is liberation. But not just the intellect of it... the embodiment. So when I’m talking about wellness I literally mean, being well in every space in our lives. Dreams is liberation work. Manifestation and deep spiritual knowing is liberation work. Ease and play and pleasure - embodied liberation. Love, joy, experiencing the transformative erotic... all embodied liberation work. So yes: I’m an educator, a scholar, a cultural anthropologist, a writer, a Womanist Theologian, a thinker... all of the above. But first, I’m a (black) (woman) on a deep love journey with myself, for myself, and for my people. Cause aren’t we made free when we see freedom on the horizon, clearly. Last night I wrote: I am not just the bright beam of light, I am the darkness too. I guess that’s shadow work but I have (we have) rejected the idea that we aren’t just goodness and rainbow beams shooting from our face all day. Sometimes we are ashy. Sometimes we are ugly. Sometimes we are wrong. Sometimes we see dark. Sometimes we are moody. We. Are. This. Too. When I started working with my lil divine feminine/vulnerability coach, I just wanted to be a goddess all day. My faith journey has reminded me, however, that Oshun is honey AND she will (insert violence here). She IS both. In fact... she is more than just the two. She is multiple. I’m not supposed to be launching NOTHINGGGG else this year but I have this yearning for community with the women folk. I want to host a retreat in Sedona this fall for a small group of women doing the deep work of vulnerability. 👩🏾‍💻👀 You prob gonna have to be vacksed to pull up but... is that something you’d be interested in? For now I think it’s gonna be black woman and WOC — and as of now I’m not certain of cost or scholarship opportunities. I was listening to “Breathe” by Michael W. Smith from his “Worship” album (probably the greatest worship album of all time) and I started sobbing. Like unmetaphoric sobs... real throaty moans and heavy tears because every now and then... I remember. Whew! . . . I was lost without myself. I was desperate for myself. My relationship with God and myself are so intricately connected that I had become unstitched fabric slipping away from my own self tryna fit myself into a low that consumed me until it was hollow and I was empty. When I was a little girl, if a door creaked, certain elders would be like, “Come in Daddy!” <- This re: a parent that was in the eternal and not in the flesh. It wasn’t ancestor “worship.” It was an internal knowing that the continued relationship with the ancestors was possible. Not that the creaking door was ACTUALLY the ghost of grandfathers passed. Just that the creaking door reminds us of Grandfather and this eternal relationship is essential to survive in these times. I remember @zakii9 saying that she understood her relationship with ancestors deeper when her father transitioned because, “Of course it continues. There is no way he would leave us.” And for me, when my maternal grandmother transitioned I felt the same way. Of course this relationship continues. Her wisdom was too vast. The energy of it must still be somewhere. But my fathers mother, whom I did not know well in this form, I did not pursue her - she pursued me. Her memory, her energy, her knowing. Came to me in dreams and through the voice of an elder Ohlone woman in Berkeley, California and I don’t care what nobody says... there was nothing evil or wrong or sacrilegious about hearing her voice and knowing she wanted more for her story than to continue to be spoken of as her trauma. My grandmother, Bernice Gully, was a wonder of a woman. I would describe her as quiet but I recently realized she wasn’t quiet, folk just never listened. In this earth form I did not know her well. But one day in a #BlacKGirlMixtape session, @khadiyogini said, “The rock and the hum...” heal us and they’re ancestral tools passed down! And it hit me... My grandmother gave me her rock and her hum. Longggg before she left this earth I had embodied this mechanism as a self soothing tool. Since I was a little girl I have had an imagination of myself as this free woman with long flowy skirts that dances a lot, paints, sings, plays an instrument or two or all, is a Jack of many trades and feels no way abt mastering them all because this is my only time in this form and this version of me can do a lot of stuff well and has no intentions of doing it all as a career. And I always wanted a big love but learned to judge myself for my big love. And I envisioned myself in New Orleans and Harlem and Atlanta and LA... Japan Africa Rome. And ppl said, “You live somewhere new Everytime I see you. When you gonna settle down?” And that felt 😬 but a little bit it stung like, “🤔 Am I wrong?” And I have never had a “real job” and always dreamed of living a “Pearl Cleage Character Life” where I make large amounts of money for projects that people would never believe is a real thing... but it is because this is my real life - and there was some judgment for that dream too. And me and a friend giggled recently about the language of, “my lover” but also I grew up watching Drucilla be a bad bish chakras aligned and Drucilla had lovers so (sucks teeth) y’all ngas should have never had me watching Young And The Restless at 5 years old if you didn’t want Cathrine Chancelor to be one of my possibility models 🤷🏾‍♀️ And so here I am... a wild woman on a wild woman journey and the knowing that yearning is GOOD for my wild woman HEART and that I shld not judge where it leads me. There is a residue of trauma from being taught/believing that my body was not my own, that pleasure was not part of the equation, that my body was JUST for Gods use, the church’s use (to get the testimony out of it), society’s use, my family’s use... my body was not/is not for my own pleasure... Now here I am and 100% on mamas - if I showed up with a baby toDay, not one person in my family or my church community from my youth wld do a double take because, “Whew! Finally Nigga! Hand me that baby!” This isn’t abt a baby (because 👀 honestly leave them kids where they at until you can afford a nanny AND a mother in law suite a block away). This is abt how believing celibacy would reward us... and 9/10 for Blk churched women - it did not. 😬 We didn’t get the reward! -27! Would not recommend. I want a refund! How could not owning our bodies or our sexuality and sensuality have benefited us in any way other than making us all awkward and in need of deep therapy around emotional boundaries, coaching on celebrating ourselves (cause what is that), most of us that practiced celibacy have a relationship with an eating disorder or two because we can’t see our bodies clearly (because we are taught to ignore it so we can not see ourselves clearly), and where is the research on the relationship between celibacy and fibroids/endometriosis/pcos? Show me the data! SHOW ME THE DATA! I know it exists. I’m just continuing to process body ownership as a spiritual healing mechanism AND as a justice issue. I’m just wondering what a deeper leaning into pleasure that has nothing to do with anything but just, “Thats what I wanted” looks and feels like. I’m just wondering what my life work/creation looks like with my good pleasure at the center. I’m just wondering what my body looks and feels like when my gaze is the most important gaze.
