Really appreciating this moment very early in the Kurt/Blaine friendship where it is Kurt who is the touchy feely one, who is reaching out for contact.

So something I always wonder regarding 6:7 and you might help me!!! If you do your analysis of the scenes. During Time after time, we see them all take photos off Rachel’s wall, but it’s hard to distinguish who takes what. Except look at the WSS picture of Blaine and Rachel. I think it’s taken down by an arm wearing a brown jumper - Kurt’s. Blaine is in a cream cardigan. I think this is a subtle moment where we see Kurt thinking fondly back to that particular time, and what happened during that time!!!

As best I can tell, you are correct! Kurt is the only one wearing a dark sweater (pictured below) besides Mercedes, and the hand shown is white. Blaine is indeed wearing a light colored sweater (also pictured below).

Here is the moment you were describing where he puts a picture of Blaine and Rachel from West Side Story into the scrapbook. I captured a gif of the scene slowed down that shows it pretty clearly. Good catch! I definitely never noticed that.

Worst of Will: 1x09 “Wheels”

This episode’s rap sheet entry is: 

Just giving the part in Defying Gravity to Rachel rather than holding auditions.

I got a little overexcited about learning how to make gifs and I also had a lot to say so the rest of this post is under a cut.

When Mercedes asks for the part, dismissed for questionable reasons (I think I’ve heard people who actually know stuff about music say this is bogus but I don’t have a source on it but...it feels like a thinly veiled excuse for racism)

When Kurt asks for the part, dismissed for literally no reason at all

Also, this isn’t captured in the gifs, but Will laughs when he delivers his lines both times (I kind of captured it in this gif). It is subtle but it is there and if you watch each scene carefully, I think you will see it too. The rest of the class even joins in with his laughter after he turns down Mercedes. Please note that they weren’t laughing when Mercedes asked about the part; they only laughed at the idea once their teacher did it first. This is not the behavior a teacher should be modeling for his students.

This sucks on many levels. Kurt and Mercedes are both dismissed and their teacher’s attitude suggests that he does not see either of them as serious candidates for the solo. No wonder Kurt is filled with ennui!

Rachel feels that something she had is being taken away, which is worse than if she had simply not gotten the solo in the first place. Yes, Rachel also needs to chill the fuck out but she does have a point. It sucks for someone to give something to you only for them to change their mind and take it away. 

Yes, and giving her the part was your first mistake. If you had just had auditions like a normal choir, this never would have happened.

Let’s also talk about the fact that Burt’s complaint gets Kurt an opportunity to audition, but Mercedes was not included. 

Was this really in the spirit of full access, Will? Was it?

Recommended Consequences: Will has to answer to Burt Hummel every time he does not offer open auditions from this day forth (spoiler alert: it’s going to happen a lot).

Worst of Will: 1x11 “Hairography”

This episode’s rap sheet entry is: Losing confidence in his team way too easily

All it took was one (1) performance to get them from this...

...to this

Will’s decision to go in a completely different direction and try hairography is reactionary and misguided. The idea that the New Directions would ever win by being the sexiest or the flashiest is laughable. Their strength has always been their heartfelt authenticity and Will knows this by now. Even if his confidence in his students was shaken by seeing that they had underestimated the competition, he should play to his team’s strengths rather than copy another’s. Don’t try to beat someone else at their own game! Who on earth could watch this performance and think yes, the New Directions could do this better.

Furthermore, all this does is send a message to the students that he has lost confidence in them when he should be trying to keep them thinking positively. Sue was right on the money when she said:

Recommended Consequences: 

I would say maybe he deserved to have his setlist stolen but the kids didn’t do anything to deserve that. So instead, Will should have to look at himself in the mirror and contend with the fact that he wasted valuable rehearsal time and shook the confidence of his students. Or possibly have John Mulaney’s Dad share his unfiltered opinion with him.

6x07 Background Moments

We just finished our rewatch of 6x07 “Transitioning” and here are a couple fun background moments you may have missed.

1) Dave and Blaine have literally EIGHT sponges out at the sink in their apartment. WHAT? WHY? 

2) The list of crossed out lesson ideas on the whiteboard which includes: Britney 3.0, Murder Ballads, Bjork, and Biggie vs. Tupac.
