i think umbrella labels are kind of a mess honestly like ive been shippin before proship or anti discourse and didnt consent to having either one punted at me personally like i kind of think that whole thing reached its apex as a pandemic internet issue. people are just like the other one is whatever behavior package pisses me off the most. i have to ask for a definition every time i encounter a user who is active in the debate and talking about the other group often, and im like i understand why this matters to you i think but like hoooolay shit
i prefer to reserve identification with either since i kind of do believe that real life minors should generally not have to potentially experience in-narrative CSA as this like art house event used to grasp at meaning as often as they currently do in cinema or literature, and i do believe there are uses of certain tropes in widely available works (highly recognized commercial works such as American Beauty 1999) that can actually be in extremely bad taste and can warrant something being ignored or sharply warned for in mass culture. unfortunately being anti-censorship does mean going all the way and i make a point of not wasting my time and generating exposure by pointing at shit directly shaking my head in disapproval and wishing a pox on the author. some people will say that itself is being a proshipper and i have no control over that.
it is extremely difficult to slap a blanket ban on a topic without barring out what i think are deeply necessary instructive and expressive narratives on how to avoid and stand against and process harm, and also i don't believe in assuming the worst of people usually, so i don't ever go as far as saying people should never address CSA in their creative work. but i would also say i do believe that especially visual depictions of things are something that are classically understood as smth to be careful with, which is why military films are often considered an issue, for example. i will most likely never be able to fully understand people's interest in lolisho specifically and i really don't want to set myself up as being ready to have that as a topic of conversation, nor an authority on what is ok and what is not ok based solely on my internal sense of disgust? so i do not want to hold myself out as ready to interact with media that deals with All Imaginable Topics and speak out in support of anyone who addresses All Imaginable Topics because i don't do that. at most currently i check out very serious works that i believe treat the tragedy of CSA sensitively enough for me to interact with them.
i will readily disclose that i had many "close-call" encounters as a teenager that i had to struggle hard to get out of, including multiple people not bothering to ask if they were actually talking to an adult before pitching detailed erp, and the whole scene just reminds me too much of all that [which i can freely acknowledge a person's work and fictional interests may be completely unrelated to a person's real life attraction patterns & that it is miles different from attraction to RL minors usually still. but it is definitely something that will always have me scrolling past or blocking] [i think it boils down to the fact that a character being a pedophile usually does not add any interest at all for me, unlike a character being abusive in a way specific to them or tolerating abuse because of other things that have gone wrong for them in life or sometimes characters being mutually involved in a doomed relationship, and i have read a couple of times on what people use the relevant material to process and believe it would be stupid of me to equate use of those tropes to attraction to minors in all cases. but i have also in the wild encountered people who definitely and unequivocally are consuming certain media for dangerous reasons, which is an extremely small percentage that is important not to assume someone belongs to but if someone does belong to it they tend to be responsible for an incredibly high interaction volume]
i also believe that the assertion that fantasy depictions of abuse dynamics in adult spaces are generally seriously damaging to adult minds is kind of ridiculous and paternalistic? i think it's sort of elementary to assume that an author is not practicing the things they write about and an artist is usually not modeling their exact subject matter but instead just looking to motifs as a vehicle for ideas. i took an SA identification course, that shit does not look one bit like "toxic yaoi", and i am no longer ready to pretend it does. maybe 0.3% of anything i have ever encountered tagged "noncon" looks like it was intended to be a working rape simulation, most of this shit exists only in the thought freeway. it's not meaningfully changing people's perception of real life abuse/violence if it was already bad due to proper social education and proper instillment of awareness of others' perspectives
