After exploring the soft drinks aisle of Coles, it became quickly apparent that Coca Cola Amatil and PepsiCo rule the streets in terms of non-alcoholic beverages (and have done for quite some time). Fact: The beverage industry is expected to hit 2.9 trillion (AUD) dollars in 2020!

I think that the Mountain Dew (notably manufactured by PepsiCo) has a very successful brand image. It is sold as a caffeinated and energised drink with bright neon packaging and a large sharp typeface, which in my opinion SCREAMS energy. The use of triangles to keep the theme of sharp and ready-to-go as well at the bright green and yellows are very eye-catching are represent the “energy” message. Considering that Mountain Dew is meant to hype people up and keep them energised, I think that the branding is very appropriate. It is simple yet effective. 

As for the not so successful brand image, that would have to be the Deep Spring Sparkling Mineral Water. I think that the branding on the label is too much at the same time as being not enough. It also looks a bit outdated and not very enticing. I don’t think the typeface used for ‘Deep Spring’ is appropriate and the dull colour of the drink also reduces the appeal. The contrast between the deep blue of the logo and the pastel-like colours of the fruit does not go well together as they are two very different ends of the spectrum. I do however like the use of the fruit flavours as a frame for the brand image in the middle. I think that the branding for this drink could be altered to give an overall contemporary and cohesive look without changing it too much.
