Pariah is not just a work of art seeking to showcase beautiful men and their bodies, or amazing colors. Pariah tells a story. The story of oppressed men and women of color, shackled under a government still seeking to control or destroy them. Minor offenses result in life sentences, forever branding the convicted as criminals, even upon release. Henry Perez, a former prisoner and victim of the unfair justice system gave a powerful interview outlining his “enslavement” and how he survived and continues to strive to survive. His success, while commendable, is sadly not the reality of all who shared similar paths. These are Himba learners from Omuhonga Primary School near Okanguati in the Kunene Region, northern Namibia. Due to a lack of a hostel infrastructure at the primary school, from pre-primary to grade 7 - coupled with the generally low school attendance amongst the Ovahimba tribe - these learners sleep in tents and in the open space. They are also taught in makeshift tents as the school, once a mobile unit established to provide alternative education to nomadic children from mainly the Himba and Dhimba tribes, does not have enough resources to construct enough classrooms. The learners are fed twice a day through the school feeding programme and on weekends are required to return to their respective homes as the school does not have enough food to feed them over weekends. Due to the rural nature and a lack of proper roads and transportation in the area, some learners have to foot over 30km to get to their homes on weekend.
