Die etwa 15.000 Himba leben als Hirtenvolk in der Abgeschiedenheit des Kaokovelds im Nordwesten Namibias. Fast alle Himba leben in Familienclans, relativ autark und weit verstreut. Ihre Existenzgrundlage sind ihre Rinder- und Ziegenherden. Kleidung, Haartracht und Schmuck sind in der Himba Kultur von großer Wichtigkeit, und die Frauen verwenden täglich viel Zeit für die Schönheitspflege. Der Körper wird mit einer Creme aus ranzigem Butterfett und Ockerfarbe eingerieben. Der rötliche Glanz entspricht dem Schönheitsideal der Himba.

The approximately 15,000 Himba live as shepherds in the seclusion of the Kaokoveld in northwestern Namibia. Almost all Himba live in family clans, relatively self-sufficient and widely dispersed. Their livelihoods are their herds of cattle and goats. Clothing, hair and jewelry are very important in the Himba culture, and women spend a lot of time on beauty care every day. The body is rubbed with a cream of rancid butterfat and ocher color. The reddish shine corresponds to the ideal of beauty of the Himba.

These are Himba learners from Omuhonga Primary School near Okanguati in the Kunene Region, northern Namibia. Due to a lack of a hostel infrastructure at the primary school, from pre-primary to grade 7 - coupled with the generally low school attendance amongst the Ovahimba tribe - these learners sleep in tents and in the open space. They are also taught in makeshift tents as the school, once a mobile unit established to provide alternative education to nomadic children from mainly the Himba and Dhimba tribes, does not have enough resources to construct enough classrooms. The learners are fed twice a day through the school feeding programme and on weekends are required to return to their respective homes as the school does not have enough food to feed them over weekends. Due to the rural nature and a lack of proper roads and transportation in the area, some learners have to foot over 30km to get to their homes on weekend. Traditional adornment plays a significant role among the OvaHimba, it indicates age and social status within their community. The skirt is made of calf skin treated with otjize paste, a cosmetic mixture of butterfat and ochre pigment. This is also the paste they use to paint their skin and hair. The aim of this series is to change the way we look at the Himba tradition in contemporary society – the seeming dislocation between what is read as ‘traditional’ and what is read as ‘Western’. It calls for an end to preconceived visual assumptions, as the hybridization of their culture no longer facilitates a distinction between traditional and contemporary Himba identity.”

[…] I eliminated myself from the photographic process, and the sitters took charge in an act of self-portraiture. These images are meant to provide the subjects with a means of self-representation. It’s an opportunity for them to present themselves in a way that they would like to be seen by an outside audience.
