A Titanic Mystery: Where is the Missing Submarine?

You may have heard the news that a tourist submarine with five people on board has gone missing near the Titanic wreck site. The submarine, called Titan, was part of an expedition by OceanGate Expeditions, a company that offers deep-sea adventures for $250,000 per person. The submarine was supposed to dive to the Titanic and return in eight hours, but it lost contact with the surface ship after less than two hours.

Who are the missing passengers?

The five passengers on board the Titan are:

Hamish Harding, a British billionaire and explorer who runs an aviation company. He has set several world records for flying around the world in different ways, such as in a helicopter, a jet plane, and a hot air balloon. He is also a trustee of the charity Action for Happiness.

Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, members of one of Pakistan’s wealthiest families. He also runs an investment firm, a foundation that supports education in Pakistan, and is on the board of trustees of the SETI Institute, which researches extraterrestrial life. His son Suleman Dawood is a 19-year-old student in London who loves science fiction and volleyball.

Stockton Rush, the founder and pilot of OceanGate Expeditions. He is a former aerospace engineer and software entrepreneur who has a passion for exploring the ocean. He has been involved in several expeditions to the Titanic, as well as other shipwrecks and underwater habitats.

Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a French Titanic expert and former navy commander. He is known as "Mr. Titanic" because he has visited the wreck more than 30 times and has recovered thousands of artifacts from it. He is also a consultant for OceanGate Expeditions and has helped design and operate their submarines.

What happened to the submarine?

The exact cause of the disappearance of the Titan is still unknown, but there are some clues and theories. The submarine was last heard from when it was directly above the Titanic wreck site, about 900 miles off Cape Cod. It was supposed to descend to about 13,000 feet below the surface, where the water pressure is more than 6,000 pounds per square inch.

Some experts have suggested that the submarine may have suffered a mechanical failure, such as a leak or a malfunction in its thrusters or ballast tanks. Others have speculated that the submarine may have hit an underwater obstacle, such as a rock or debris from the Titanic itself. What are the chances of survival?

The Titan submarine has 96 hours of reserve oxygen, which means that if it went missing on June 18th at around 10 am local time, it would run out of air by June 22nd at around 10 am local time. However, this estimate does not take into account other factors that could affect the oxygen consumption, such as the temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels inside the submarine.

The rescue mission involves the US Coast Guard, an aircraft that can detect underwater vessels, and other ships and submarines in the area. However, finding and reaching the Titan is not easy, given its depth and location. The rescue team would need to use sonar to locate the submarine, and then send down another submersible or a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to attach a cable or a buoy to it. Then they would need to lift it up to the surface or transfer the passengers to another vessel.

The rescue team faces many challenges and risks, such as bad weather, strong currents, limited visibility, technical difficulties, and potential hazards from the Titanic wreck site itself. The rescue operation could take up to two days if the submarine has sunk to the ocean floor.
