Default passwords for routers

Most routers are shipped to customers with default passwords. To log in to the router management interface for the first time, you will need to enter a default password in a login entry screen. Usually, this password is provided in the documentation that comes with the router.

If you don't have any documentation (you received a router as a gift from someone, bought a used router, or simply lost the documentation), you can try using default passwords for routers and see if it works. Default passwords are identical for every router of a certain brand and model. So, if you search only for the router brand and model, you will be able to find out default passwords and login.

If you think that your router password has been changed and you don't know the new password, you have one more option: router hard reset. You need to look into the documentation for that particular router and find out how to perform a reset procedure (usually you need to press and hold a certain button on the router for a while).

Below is a short list of the most popular usernames and passwords for routers, covering a significant number of brands and models of routers. If your router is not listed here, please use a search engine. Search in it by typing the particular model of that router and adding "password". This will probably give you the right answer. Akamai researchers say attackers are using an old OpenSSH vulnerability to target IoT devices and launch attacks.

While the Internet of Things is touted for facilitating all sorts of life-changing services, there’s been an undercurrent of anxiety among the more security conscious IT pros.

Their concern: All those smart devices, oftentimes built with default passwords and otherwise poor protection, could put networks and users at risk. Now it’s clear those fears were warranted. Recent events have put the spotlight on IoT security – or to be more precise, IoT insecurity. Malware has surfaced that allows attackers to create botnets from vulnerable IoT devices and launch distributed denial-of-service attacks.

For example, Mirai was used in last month’s high-profile DDoS attack on the KrebsOnSecurity website. In September, Symantec reported that cybercriminals are taking advantage of poor IoT security to hijack home networks and consumer devices and carry out DDoS attacks, most often against large companies. The labelling effort is part of a broader push to drive companies to better handle security controls and privacy data in the notoriously insecure and leaky devices.

Deputy head of cabinet Thibault Kleiner told Euractiv the Commission may push companies to develop labelling for secure internet-of-things devices. The stickers plan is modelled on labels applied to white goods and other domestic appliances, as consumers apparently understand this kind of labelling. The Commission will have a mammoth task ahead of it because internet of things things are notoriously insecure.

The world’s sloppiest security appears time and again inside things, with flaws like missing and default passwords common while web servers are often left in parlous states that allow remote code execution and worse. The risk posed by sloppily-secured things was demonstrated neatly by a recent DDoS attack, rated the world’s largest to date, which emerged from a large internet of things botnet. By the time the EC gets its stickers sorted, millions of badly-secured devices will already be in circulation. Perhaps an effort to explain firmware upgrades to lay-people is also needed. ®
