A fool‘s inlove
It was late. The room was dark, with only a faint glow of the moonlight casting inside. Hero curled up on their side of the bed, back turning, and half asleep.
On the other side, Villain sat on the edge of the bed, wide awake and restless. This was an all-too-familiar pattern for them. Their thoughts drifted to various unexpressed emotions, with memories from the past constantly haunting them.
The stillness was extremely heavy between these two, until Villain broke the hush with a soft murmur,
“I don't have anyone anymore.”
Hero didn't stir, but Villain could sense that they were listening.
“You know, I used to think....even if I lost my people—my cause...I‘d at least still have a reason to fight. Something to hold onto.” They laughed under their breaths, “Now I‘m just holding onto the person who made sure I lost everything.”
Silence.
Villain stole a brief glance at Hero for a split second, before turning their gaze towards the ceiling. Slowly, they lay back down on the bed, turning their body away from Hero.
“You know that, right?” They paused, “You're the reason I lost everything. You killed them. You killed Henchman.”
Hero remained silent at first, they simply exhaled softly.
Though it was subtle, Villain’s voice wavered as they spoke, filled with raw exhaustion, “I really hate that you’re all I have left.” Their breath caught as they struggled to maintain composure. “...I honestly don’t even know why I’m still here.”
Villain let out a quiet, bitter laugh, shaky around the edges, “—or why I‘m still....holding onto this...stupid feelings for you.” their voice dropped softer, barely a whisper.
Hero shifted, just enough to have a glance at Villain. Their voice coming out raspy, “I‘m just doing what's necessary. You were a threat—and so were they.”
They pause, a bite of the lip,
“I don’t care if you want to depend on me; I never asked for your trust.” another silence fell, growing heavy, “And I sure as hell never asked you to love me either.”
Villain let out a small scoff. They didn't bother to turn their head, they couldn't even bring themself to look at Hero after hearing that.
“Yeah, I know.”
They smiled pitifully,
“But you knew I would anyway, didn't you?”
And just like that, no more words came after that. Only the faint sounds of their breaths.
