Dazzling Spiral Defensive Spell (Winx Inspired)

An offensive-defensive spell to deflect away any negative entities or beings who may be trying to set up home in your personal home and domain. This spell should be done hand in hand with general cleansing and warding practices. This spell can be considered a form of banishing spell and ward strengthening. Be sure to practice this spell regularly especially if you feel that negative entities may be slipping through some cracks again. This spell is not a substitute for cleansing your space.

You Will Need:

✨ Black Pepper

✨ Garlic Powder

✨ Cloves (whole or ground)

✨ Sea Salt (table salt works if needed)

✨ Rosemary (dried)

✨ Marjoram (dried)

✨ 3 White Candles

✨ 1 Black Candle

✨ Envelope

✨ Bowl

✨ Spoon

( ✨ Optional) Wax Press/Stamp

Set Up:

Be sure to have a nice open space to work in, somewhere comfortable for this spell can sometimes take some time. Make sure it somewhere you can burn candles comfortably and safely. You will want to cleanse your space before working, especially seeing this is a form of banishment spell you don’t want anything interfering with it. Place your candles in front of you, the 3 white ones in a row before you and the black one near your dominant side for easy to reach purposes. You will be using melted wax in this spell so put down wax paper or paper towels or anything else that would be okay to get some spilled wax on if needed. Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind possibly getting wax stains on. Ensure any long hair is pulled back to make sure it doesn’t get too close to any open flames during this spell. If needed I suggest having a water bottle near you for drinking purposes. This spell can get a lot of energy due to physical motions, energy work and chanting - sometimes a sip is needed! Test your space to make sure it’s not too crowded, stretch out your arms in front of you and behind you and to either side and up above your head, you shouldn’t hit anything or risk knocking over things. This area is needed for some arm gestures you will be doing.

The Spell:

✨ Once you have set up your space and your candles are all lit, place your bowl before you and add your ingredients and herbs to it. If needed, feel free to use the spoon for the purpose of measuring. Mix them together well, while stirring it you may choose to do a banishing chant or spoken word spell if you desire - this is not required but can certainly add extra “umph” to the spell.

✨ Once you are satisfied with the herb mixture raise your arms up above your head and stretch them out to either side and begin ‘mixing’ swimming motions with your arms, moving them from the side and forward then pulling them towards you like scooping an armful of something, then back out to your side. He may feel a bit ridiculous, but visualize taking all of the light from the candles and energy from the herbs and using your arms and body to mix it up into a swirl or ‘whirlpool’ of light and energy. This visualization is how you are going to change this from a standard banishment spell to a strengthening one. 

✨ Continue these gestures while stating very clearly “You are not welcome, so I cast the light to keep you out!” You may repeat this as much as you feel needed but make it very clear. You do not want them here and they are not welcome, put that force into the spell.

✨ Once you are satisfied with the ‘whirlpool’ you have made use of your hands to capture it into an orb and lower it into the bowl you are using, this is all visualized. Once it is in the bowl hold your hands over it “You will keep out”

✨ Take your herbs and the energy contained in them and pour it or spoon it into your envelope. Seal it shut with the melted wax of the black candle - blow the candle out first before pouring it onto it. You may then press the hot wax with the back of your spoon or to use a stamp seal if preferred.

✨ Once you have the envelope sealed place it somewhere near a major entrance or high traffic area of your home or near one of your wards. This is to strengthen as well as banish anything that may already be trying to sneak in.

✨ Cleanse your work space and yourself afterwards as a final ‘closing’ to the spell.

✨ Optional - you may also add any sigils or runes to the envelope if desired or a written spell for banishing/protection onto it as well.This is not required but could be something extra to add for any additional boost you may seek.

Aftercare:

✨ Try to keep the envelope in a dry place where it won’t be damaged by pets or children. If needed or desired you may hang it up or put it up in a hard to reach area like above a door frame or atop a tall bookshelf. 

✨ Replace the spell with a new spell envelope every month or so - depending on how weak you feel it may be getting. The old one it is recommended to burn it and toss the ashes along entry points for last bits of warding. If this is not possible proper disposal in trash or composting is also possible - be sure to remove wax before composting especially if it is a communal area. Be sure that paper is allowed in any composting area you may choose to use.

Candle Reading

I’m super passionate about candle reading and since so many of you are always asking about my results I thought I’d post this picture and share a little story. 

This particular work was a tapa boca spell (shut up or shut your mouth) and was performed on someone who was speaking out of turn and saying extremely rude and nasty things about me and other close friends. This woman was in a position of power over me and I could not confront her so I opted for candle instead. 

I remember being so angry and channeling all of that emotion into my work and I was so thrilled when the wax melted this way. To me, the way the wax melted in the front clearly looks like a tongue and that was exactly what I was aiming for, I wanted this woman’s tongue in my control and for her to shut her mouth and keep my and friends names out of it. This spell was performed about 2 and a half years ago now, but I got exactly what I wanted. She stayed out of my way, the gossip stopped, and I basically wasn’t around her very much after that.

Candles can give you super clear signs about your work so it's important that you take the time to get the messages your work is sending and let your candles burn all the way down where they have enough space to let the wax flow if working with free-standing candles.

Dirt

When hoodoo was created, most of the people using it did not have ready access to the best ingredients and often had to hide their practice. Consequently, a lot of what was used had to be things people could obtain. This is why hoodoo uses various roots, sticks, herbs, honey, sugar, and other household supplies readily available. There is no exception for dirt. Different kind of dirt is used for different kind of things but some examples include:

Dirt from the crossroads: used for many things including hexing/cursing, summoning certain spirits, opening roads, etc.

Dirt from a bank: Most commonly used in money work. I swear by bank dirt. It adds so much potency to money workings and every time I have used it I have gotten great results. Could also be used in works to get a loan, get approved for a house, relieve debt, etc.

Dirt from a church: This is usually used for works that have to do with cleansing, healing, or otherwise “holy” matters.

Graveyard dirt: A staple in hoodoo, used for many different things including curses, healing, ancestor work, goofer dust, hot foot powder, etc.

Some of these are examples of things that have been used traditionally and throughout hoodoo’s history. However, all types of folk magick utilize whatever you have.

I have in the past used dirt from a car dealership(to obtain a car), dirt from a red ant farm(defensive/hexing), dirt from a destroyed/abandoned building(defensive/hexing), and dirt from a specific apartment complex I wanted to live in. *not all of these are my ideas, but some of them are* 

Folk Magick is and was about using whatever you have around you, and often whatever cost less. Do not ever feel like you can’t do effective, life changing magick with twigs and leaves. You can. Our ancestors did, you can too.

Hi there anonny-non! I hope you find this helpful, and sorry I didn’t have the space for a more comprehensive answer. If you’d like to discuss further, please feel free to send me a personal message :3

A couple of general points: There are MANY LOTS systems of magic-working. Among others, you might want to try out:

Ceremonial magicWitchcraft with a particular focus (the sea, the kitchen, the hearth & home, the city / urban environments, plants, animals, or technology)Chaos magicFaith-based magical traditions, which can include Christopaganisms, Faery faiths, Kemeticism, Hellenic polytheism, Celtic polytheism, Wicca, Heathenry…

These are just some of the faiths that I know of which are open to anyone. Depending on your cultural heritage and your degree of inclusion within a closed culture that has a history of oppression and erasure, there may be other faith-based practices you can take up under guidance from someone who was raised with the traditions. I am a white person of hodgepodge European ancestry, born & raised in the U.S. in a Catholic family, so I cannot speak for closed cultures or faiths.

My personal style is very science-based with some inspiration from northern European folk- and plant-lore, a dash of modern technologies, and whatever materials are at hand (usually kitchen stuff). I don’t consider deities or things like angels and demons distinct entities in my experience, so I don’t work with, invoke, or otherwise call on them. However, your perception and belief may be different. Belief and perception will somewhat influence the flavor of spellweaving that works best for you.

This also applies to associations. Each magical system and any attendant religious traditions that may have seeped into it / developed along with it will have different associations for planetary bodies, days of the week, elements, and other materials. I would not presume to assert that any single one of these associations is more “true” or “powerful” than the others, because again, it completely depends on your personal beliefs, perceptions, and experiences. Don’t feel compelled to wait for the “right” or “more powerful” planetary alignments if you don’t feel particularly strongly that the planets matter to you. Don’t worry about which gods or spirits to invoke if you realize you actually don’t believe in gods or spirits, or not the ones those people over there are calling on. Let your preferred materials and your curiosity lead you to try what seems best, or most fun, to you (there’s no reason magic can’t be fun, I find it quite a lot more focused when I’m enjoying the work!)

In terms of hexes, I’m not quite sure what you mean? The old German roots of this word come from a verb meaning simply “to practice witchcraft,” without specific reference to “type” of spells cast. In certain circles that frown on magic used to influence other people, it seems to have taken on negative connotations in, but I’m not sure there’s a universal usage for the term. If you mean things like bindings and other “not-quite-curses,” then here are some resources:

On the issue of backlash from magics that you may work: “karma” is actually a misappropriated term from Hindu and Buddhist traditions. In reality it means “action,” not “result” or “consequence.” The act of casting a spell is a karma. The result of escaping from harm, or causing harm to another, is a consequence. Having bad luck after you yourself wish bad luck on another person is NOT “karma,” it is at most an instance of irony, but more likely just coincidence that your pattern-finding brain parts want very much to interpret as cause and effect. 

The only unsavory effects I’ve experienced from any defensive magic occurred when I wasn’t careful and turned what was supposed to be a personal protection jar into basically a rotting sickness self-curse, because I was lazy and didn’t work around very obvious possible issues with both perishable ingredients and vague wording. The jar felt wrong from the start, but I unwisely ignored my gut when it said “nah… this isn’t going too well, un-do it,” and let it fester. Usually your basic self-preservation tingles will tell you if something is off. Lizzy’s resources linked above have some tips you can incorporate into your spells for guarding against backlash, but as she herself will tell you, in most cases they’re not necessary.
