No matter what your defensive weapon of choice is, the government has probably gotten involved and made laws for it.

Don't carry a weapon "just for show." If you carry a defensive weapon, no matter what type of weapon it is, you should be ready (trained) and willing (mentally prepared) to use your defensive weapon if you are attacked or threatened.

Would you go to something like this? If you do, be wary about the person(s) throwing the "party." They may not be knowledgeable about the products or local/state laws. Also, learned how to effectively use any self defense tool that you plan to carry.
