The Bunker: a breakfast radio show from your hosts David, David, and Tom set in post-apocalyptic Britain. This podcast is... so hard to describe. It's a radio show, sure, but it's also interviews with real-life artists and influencers, musings on the true meaning of art, "edu-tainment" segments about how to craft a story, and biting social commentary. The main story is so great and heartbreaking and funny and emotional. All I can say is that it's one of the best stories I've ever experienced and you should definitely go listen to it! If you don't love it I'll literally die on the spot.
Within the Wires: okay so this might be a little more mainstream because it's from Night Vale Presents, but it really doesn't get the love it deserves. again, this is one that's hard to describe. basically, seasons are split into various stories from the same universe, an alternate history of our world. The second season is my favorite but all of them expertly parse out small details that slowly build into the climax. And the world that is revealed is eerie and amazingly crafted.
The After Disaster Broadcast: this one is for all the disaster gays out there. Set after the apocalypse, our protagonist Jo sets out with two companions to leave her uncle's bunker and find the new world. It's funny and charming and creepy and well-acted. And gay. Did I mention gay?
Flash Forward: this is kind of a mix between a fiction podcast and a nonfiction podcast. First, a sci-fi scenario is portrayed through acting. Then the host, Rose Eveleth, talks to a range of experts about what that scenario could actually entail. For instance, topics have gone from teleportation to food tablets to underwater settlement. It's really cool and I've learned a ton about science, sci-fi, and economics in a really creative way.
Dreamboy: this podcast incorporated my love for surreal horror, gorgeous music, and weird side characters all in one! it's narrated by our main character, a musician named Dane who's staying in a town called Pepper Heights for a few weeks. There's a lot of really strange things going on, including creepy not-girl scouts, our favorite mysterious disaster twink Luke, and Dane's recurring nightmares about drowning. And it's all set to one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in my life. Give it a listen!! (Just a warning: it's explicit. Very explicit.)
MarsCorp: made by the same people who made The Bunker, this podcast employs the same satirical tone. It's a comedy, but there are some dark moments. The sound quality and acting are amazing. The story follows E.L. Hobb, a MarsCorp employee woken from cryogenic sleep to become base manager of the first human colony on Mars. It's so good and ridiculous and campy and brilliant!!
