Marx’s great achievement was to demonstrate how all phenomena which appear to everyday bourgeois consciousness as simple deviations, contingent deformations and degenerations of the ‘normal’ functioning society (economic crises, wars, and so on), and as such abolishable through amelioration of the system, are necessary products of the system itself - the points at which the the ‘truth’ the immanent antagonistic character of the system, erupts. To ‘identify with a symptom’ means to recognize in the ‘excesses’, in the disruption of the ‘normal’ way of things, the key offering us access to its true functioning.
