I’m Chris Achiampong, a Rotational Degree Apprentice (RDA) at Pearson Business School. The RDA gives me the chance to rotate across 3 different companies, working 4 days and studying 1 day each week. I’m currently working as an Assistant Product Manager in the online team at Tesco; the role involves auditing and making recommendations about Tesco’s website to create a more seamless, uninterrupted experience for online customers.
Prior to this I worked as a seller in the healthcare and life sciences sales team at IBM, meeting IBM’s customers and business partners and facilitating sales opportunities; I was one of the first apprentices to work in sales and it was a phenomenal experience. After my placement at Tesco, I’m looking forward to joining the marketing team at Unilever for 9 months.
Coming from a low-socio economic household, the opportunity to work at great companies such as IBM, Tesco and Unilever is scarce. My apprenticeship has given me an amazing opportunity to not only improve myself, but to also be an ambassador for social mobility too. It has given me the motivation, courage and tools to succeed professionally and make a positive impact. Thanks to my apprenticeship, I won regional Higher or Degree Apprentice of the Year (London) and was shortlisted for National Apprentice of the Year in the 2017 National Apprenticeship Awards.
Outside of my apprenticeship, I’m a trustee at the EY Foundation and chair of their youth panel, helping to fulfil their vision to reduce youth unemployment and I’m involved in the Government led #GetInGoFar apprenticeship campaign. I’m on the advisory board for the BAME (Black and Minority Ethnics), an organisation aiming to promote the diversity of apprenticeships. I’m also an ambassador for IBM’s apprenticeship scheme and in my spare time, I’m a part-time football scout for Liverpool Football Club.
