smth I noticed in reading matt's origin story (the og in #1, the slight retcon in #53 and ofc the one in #164) and that not a lot of people notice is matt's love for baseball? he even mentions prior to his accident that he wants to ask jack about joining a junior league (I think this was in #53).
and now going back to samnee et al., the scene with kirsten's dad and matt deciding to forgo his masks just gets a whole new depth? because it happens while playing baseball — something matt liked and had to abandon not because of his disability (baseball for blind/vi people exists) but because of certain masks and personas he had to curate and keep. and it does make me wonder if kirsten's dad (sorry can't remember his name) didn't do it on purpose as to nudge matt towards his perspective on being mask-free now that everyone knew anyways — and also for the sales of the promised autobiography.
but yeah. matt and baseball should be explored more often.
Ooooh, yes, I love this! I had not picked up on Matt's passion for baseball in particular, and that's a wonderful detail that, I agree, should absolutely be explored more!
That "I'm tired of masks" scene from volume 4 #14 is one of my favorite Daredevil scenes of all time, and you're right, it hits extra hard because it takes place while Matt is having fun openly indulging in a pleasure he hasn't allowed himself to try "since [he] was ten" (and killing it, by the way). I love your idea that Kirsten's dad (Wendell, I believe?) might have even picked the location and activity on purpose. I'd believe it...
Matt's relationship to sports is something I find really interesting, and I've always cherished the little glimpses we get of his athletic prowess in that context (alongside the volume 4 baseball scene, I also love the basketball scene in volume 1 #255, and of course, any time he gets into the boxing ring. Even this scene from the movie pushes those buttons for me). To your point, it's not just because it's fun seeing Matt show off his physical abilities in a way that's different from his usual rooftop acrobatics, it's also because it ties so closely to his childhood and all of the things he wanted to do but couldn't thanks to Jack's well-meaning overprotectiveness and, later, his secret identity. Seeing Matt live out his athlete dreams is fun and sweet, and seeing him let the shields down enough to feel free to do so is even more meaningful. Him smashing one out of the park and then saying "I'm tired of masks" hits hard, because it drives home just how long he's been wearing one mask or another, playing one role or another, and suppressing key parts of himself.
