#OnThisDay in @chicagocubs history ▸ During the nightcap of a doubleheader, the Cubs’ hard hitting right fielder Bill Nicholson is intentionally walked, with the bases loaded, by @sfgiants (née New York Giants) player-manager Mel Ott during the eighth inning. Nicholson’s RBI sparks a three-run Cubs rally to tie the game, however the Giants would come back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the game 10-12.
After watching Nicholson hit four consecutive home runs from his last at-bat on July 22nd through the first game of the doubleheader, and watching another round tripper earlier in the nightcap, it is hard to blame Ott for IBB.
Nicholson became only the fifth player, following Abner Dalrymple (1881), Napoleon Lajoie (1901), Del Bissonette (1928), and Mel Ott (1929) to receive an intentional pass with the bases loaded (Barry Bonds joined the club in 1998 and Josh Hamilton in 2008).
