07/05/22 - Newport, RI - THE CLIFF WALK - If you want to see old ocean front mansions from the 'Gilded Age', do the 3.5 mile Newport Cliff Walk: a National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District that provides public access to private oceanfront property as long as you stay on the trail. Even on a cloudy and dreary day like today, the rocky ocean shore scenery, wide variety of wild flowers and of course, the old mansions are still a sight to see. If we had to do it over again, I think a better way to see the old mansions would be from a boat where you would have much better sight lines over some of the high fences and hedges that obscured many of the mansions from public view. For some reason, the free trolley that was supposed to take us back to where we started, was full every time it passed us by so we got the added bonus of walking through more neighborhoods with big estates: just not on the water. Clearly, lots of old money here. Later, at the recommendation from Weatherman, a friend we met while hiking the Appalachian Trail who grew up in this area, we had a great seafood lunch at Blounts in nearby Warren and a Del's lemonade for dessert. We drew the line at coffee milk: way too much sugar. All in all, we had a great experience seeing Rhode Island. Here's to building more memories.
Today's Walking Photo: Oh man, I love this carefully-but-probably-unprofessionally-laid tilework in the sidewalk, no doubt the brainstorm of some shopkeeper in hopes of driving foot traffic through the front door.
I sure wish I could visit Del’s and offer my appreciation…but this is just a dumb ol’ T-Mobile store now.

Del’s lemonade stand - Narragansett town beach
Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut with cup of Del’s Frozen Lemonade. Cover by Carin Goldberg.
Can’t go to New England and not get Del’s
Del’s Shandy (Narragansett / Del’s)
Brewery : Narragansett / Del’s Beer : Del’s Shandy Style : Fruit Beer / Radler / Shandy Variance : Brewed with Del’s Lemon Concentrate
7.5 / 10
Ok so this one has me torn. On one hand, this is a super refreshing brew and it brings together my intense love of lemonade and my undying passion for beer but on the other hand, it falls a little short of greatness and leaves me wanting a little more from this. Del’s is apparently one of the best frozen lemonade brands out there hailing from a state that no one really gives a shit about except for Peter Griffin but if it’s as good as they say then I may have to take a trip to give it a whirl. This has a strong lemon flavor to start that you can tell is from concentrate and not fresh but is very reminiscent of an Italian ice before a light lager flavor mixes in and that’s about it. I’m not saying for one second that this beer isn’t a great match for this warm weather but I just feel like there could have been a little more to it than just a lemon bomb. As far as shandies go, this beer definitely can hold it’s ground with the best of them and my main reason for reviewing this is because I know there are a whole slew of you out there looking for that perfect summer beer so I’d definitely snag this for that BBQ or tailgating event. As for you newbies, this is as far from actual beer as it gets so it’s a perfect way to get into craft but just keep in mind that you probably won’t taste many other beers like this. Cheers!
