oh boy oh buddy. wiley's my best friend in the entire world. truly. there was some plan out there in the universe for us to come together in times when we needed it most. i was feeling lonely from the covid times and my college besties being scattered around the country, and i know i came into wiley's life at a time when she needed a hand out of a dark hole too. over the past five years, it's been an honor to grow and build all of these universes with you. you're my number one collaborator and writing partner, my go-to person for all things in life.

that's the thing about being ageless, immortal, isn't it? you've got nothing but time. time to travel the world, time to decide who you want to be, time to fill the void with laughter and the pleasures of the ever-expanding universe without care. free from the worries of not having enough time to accomplish all that you desired, free from the burdens of the creeping grains of sand filling glass chambers, and free from the needling second hand of an incessantly ticking clock.

it's lonely, though, as eden has come to discover, but perhaps that's her own fault. she built a fortress around herself, a castle made of wrought iron, and even after all these years, she has not allowed anyone inside to share the neon signs of modern tokyo, the glimmering city lights reflecting upon the surface in the bay as she sits atop the golden gate bridge.

i can't remember the last time i watched the sun rise.

"Oh, Nym! Imagine it!" Marie gushed, her expression bright, taking both of Nymeria's hands in her own. She smiled, a little coy, as if she knew a secret. She leaned in, as if to share said secret, and smiled knowingly. "I have wonderful news. You don't have to imagine. Not anymore. There are films now, in color. Surely one of them has a sunrise, non?" It was 1935 and while there had been talk of color films, Becky Sharp was the most recent and most technologically advanced. And for vampires who could not bare the sun, coming or going, it was the only real chance to observe it. Marie had longed to experience it herself, though until now, the theater in town had been exclusively black and white.

For a brief moment, her mind wandered. Back to France, back to her human life. If her exuberance faltered, she hoped Nym wouldn't notice. Her very last sunset at the convent, the night her maker had abducted her. And never a sunrise after that, for any of them, lest they burn. And then she moved swiftly on, and lept up, pulling Nym to her feet. "Will you come with me? To the late night showing? We can get all dressed up. I'll come for you this evening." She released her hands and reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind Nym's ear. "We'll get some dinner, too, if you'd like?" She batted her eyelashes as if to say Please?

the harbor is relatively calm, aside from the winds that force the waters to lap up at the walls that create the slight deck they stand on, with him towering above her and his hands in his pockets to fight off the urge to appear far less approachable, that expression mean and arms folded as is typical. the sun isn't as vibrant today, allowing them both the comforts of overcast.

"know it seems like he's overbearin', but it's for good reason. something is comin', and it's not gonna be good for any of us." sighing a bit, the older one looks over to her, finally, after what has felt like an age of silence. "just trust that the lot of us are doin' our best."

they are not alone, and it's perhaps that fact that has him kinder than he would have been should it only have been adults in the room. though, with the way those harsh, iced eyes set on nymeria even now, when there is a mild frustration bubbling beneath his skin, it is unclear as to if assumptions of typical behavior apply.

the two children with them in the living room of orlov towers, playing with wooden trains older than they can comprehend, continue about their ways, sebastian sitting in front of nymeria with one hand holding a blue-painted train and the other reaching for her skirts to get her attention, only to divert when she speaks the words she does. izolda sits in vincent's lap across from the others, more focused on the wooden tree in her fingers as she turns it this way and that.

"you are not broken," he whispers across that small space to the eldest of those he has drawn into his care, his head shaking just that scant bit. "perhaps there are pieces of you that have damage, are not exactly what you had hoped they would be, but that does not mean that you are broken."

the girl in his lap reaches for his finger, squeezing it tightly. she is a testament to his love, and the truth woven into the words of kindness reserved solely for those three.

"what is it that makes you think this? perhaps i can ease some of your woes."

smoke billows from between his teeth, the sharp things that often threaten, but not with her. here, they are the same shape as a hand in front of a body in the front seat of a skidding car, regardless of the fact that they have no real use presently. they've already been utilized, as evidenced by the form lain out on the hardwood at the foot of the man leaned back in a chair built for lesser men, cigarette between fingers held up by elbow tucked against the arm of the rocker.

"i have my ways, солнышко." eyes, thousands upon thousands of them, everywhere and anywhere at all given times, each set loyal lest they lose one of the pair. he shifts, sits up just a touch so that he may cross one leg over the other, in the process kicking the lifeless thing on the floor without care.

the cigarette is drawn from, the smoke of black tinge being released in a pointed stream upwards, away from her as he glances to the door behind her, expecting something more to come through, perhaps, by the expression held as it turns back up to her. "i have no intention of relocating or coaxing you. this is merely a courtesy, so you are aware that you are being followed by someone with less savory intentions." a motion of his hand towards the body.
