RANDOM BONUS COMIC! Avatar Involved: new York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Inupiag, Virginia, Wisconsin, Tennessee, South Carolina, Delaware, Alaska, DC, and Maryland.
I sketched this back when that winter front swept through the eastern states and finished it up this weekend.
Still working on Mississippi’s comic, which should go up tomorrow (Life is making mepost on Friday for the moment)
However, I thought I’d post this comic. This is the cover to my STATE OF DISUNION COMIC! Yes, 30 pages (27 comics 3 pages of sketches), collecting the best of SoD from 2015 collected together in a handy little 9x5 comic book (made by me because I am insane, so there exist like 15 copies- probably gonne be $10)
Look for it at fine conventions near you … if near you means “somewhere near Dallas”.
I’ll also be at Austins’ Staples Media Expo this weekend, Houston’s Space City Con May 27th, and possible Louisiana’s Louisiana Con in Lafayette,
Characters: DC, Virginia, Delaware, (Mississippi, Alabama there at the end)
Notes: - In the SoD universe, Delaware originally appeared as the avatar for the Black slaves brought to Jamestown in 1619 and then later became the avatar for the state of Delaware. Likewise Mississippi and Alabama first appeared as avatars for the southern slaves prior to being avatars for their respected states. World building more than anything. Other characters that appeared somewhere other than the land their state is in are Montana, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Indiana)
- The Black slaves were brought on the English warship White Lion. It had been pretending to be a Dutch ship (hence the letters saying the Dutch had come by) and plundered slaves from a Portuguese ship. The white Lion then traded them to Jamestown for supplies.
- There are some written records indicating that some of the black servants did maintain their status of “indentured servant” and so were eventually freed and given land and rights just like any other. Other records indicated that the practice of keeping Africans for “live -service” took hold early. The first slave for life recognized by the courts was, John Casor, in 1655.
- The last line about “What if we convert,” originally it was looked way down on to have a fellow Christian as a slave, so conversion was a loophool that was closed in 1662. Here is a timeline of Virginia’s slave laws.
