Do you know where I can look/ask for deleted fics ? I stumble upon delicious bookmarks of hundred of bottom Jared fics I never read but sadly a lot of them were based on deleted/purged journal :(
A really good place to start your search is with Spnstoryfinders on LiveJournal. There are two great lists to check.
The first is a list of deleted/purged journals, which you can find here. This list will show you if the author doesn’t want their work shared. Many remove their stuff for publishing. Whatever the reason, if the author has stated they don’t want the work shared, then it is gone for good. This list also includes download links to works that can be shared and links to searches for specific stories by said author. That will tell you that no one has been able to find a copy of it yet.
The second link is for deleted stories, but author are still active and you can find that here. This will also let you know if authors don’t want those stories shared. If they do, there is usually a download link for it there. This will also show links to searches for specific stories by said author. That will tell you that no one has been able to find a copy of it.
If you don’t see the author you were looking for and/or the specific story (if the author did not expressly deny permission for the story to be shared), then you might consider posting a request on Spnstoryfinders (I know you can reply anonymously, but I don’t think you can post a request anonymously so you may have to join LJ in that case).
Another possibility is to check Audiofic. Although they are still restoring their files since a server move/backup, you can sometimes find podfics of deleted stories (it's how I found Laurel Heights by letsgetstarted, for example). I know a podfic might not be ideal format for some folks, but it may be the only version left.
The reality is some stories are gone for good. A good idea is to always grab a copy (if on Ao3) or make one yourself if it is a story you really love. I know that doesn’t help for past ones, however. Authors generously share their work and it is theirs to control. They have no obligation to make their story free and available to us forever. Some reader is always going to be late to the party(*raises hand*) and that’s just the way it goes.
I hope these suggestions help and good hunting!
