If you were nto paying attention you should have been because you need to be aware of the things that occur in jolly ole Bim. The social media networks were on fire yesterday but in case you were working and did not have time here is today's news-cap. WHO IS TRYING TO KILL CHRIS SINCKLER? The police have told Chris Sinckler that there is evidence that at least two people are trying to kill him and will deploy officers to protect him. Who in Barbados has time to plan the assassination of Chris Sinckler? If the police has evidence of this why have the two culprits not been arrested and charged? These are serious accusations documented in the house of parliament and if Sinckler is a co-conspirator plotting his own assassination he should be arrested forthwith!! BARBADOS ECONOMY CONTINUES TO SINK WHILE SINCKLER WINS - THE NO-CONFIDENCE motion against Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler was defeated 15-14 moments ago in the House of Assembly. When deputy clerk of parliament Nigel Jones polled those present, all members of the Democratic Labour Party rose in support of embattled Sinckler, while those from the Barbados Labour Party voted against him. Speaker of the House Michael Carrington was exempt from voting. MIA’S DEFENCE - For nearly three hours the Opposition elaborated on the 22 charges contained in Mottley’s motion, which sought to show that Sinckler had been a consistent failure as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, and why he should be fired by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart. Perhaps his greatest failure, said Mottley, was Sinckler’s admission in the August 13 Budget of a decline of $300 million in foreign reserves in three months. It was, she added, “an indicator that we were dealing with a minister of finance who did not understand his role and responsibility to this country to maintain the stability and confidence necessary . . . . That is the equivalent of a man standing in the dock and saying guilty as charged”. After it became clear that no one from the Government benches was going to respond to the charges being made, Mottley chose to shut it down. ESTWICK BEST BET - Opposition Member of Parliament for St. James North Edmund Hinkson said that Minister of Finance and Economic Christopher Sinckler has left a trail of broken promises since his time in this position. “Local businesses are not only sending home their employees or making them redundant, but closing down as well. Hinkson also made the suggestion that current Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management Dr. David Estwick be given the Finance and Economics portfolios due to his background in these areas. NO CONFIDENCE DEBATE DEBUNKED? A disappointing debate that ended on a sour note. That’s how two political commentators, Peter Wickham and Dr Tennyson Joseph, described yesterday’s motion of no-confidence in Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler in the House of Assembly. Both expressed disappointment that no more than three members of the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) spoke on the matter, while in failing to strongly defend Sinckler, Government diminished the meaningfulness of the exercise. Pollster Wickham said Government did not take the motion seriously and this was demonstrated in the initial reaction from Sinckler. “They never saw it as a legitimate expression of [public sentiment] and treated it with contempt, quite frankly.” He added that it was unfortunate former Prime Minister Owen Arthur did not speak and said this would have weakened the Opposition’s presentation. But he stated that he didn’t see it as a fracture between BLP leader Mia Mottley and senior members in the team. CABINET RESHUFFLE - Now that the no-confidence motion against Chris Sinkler has been lost. Do you think that Prime Minister Freundel Stuart should reshuffle his cabinet? ZERO GROWTH BUT ALL IS WELL IN BIM - The Barbados Economy has shown no growth this year for three consecutive quarters, but the Central Bank is pinning a turnaround on a number of tourism and construction projects to eke out some growth by 2015. In this connection, the island’s critical foreign exchange reserves, which Government has been fighting to protect since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008, fell by $447 million since December 2012. That fall, over the last nine months, has left the island with just $1 billion in foreign reserves, but the governor contended the “reserve levels were adequate to cover contingencies” and was enough for 13 weeks of imports. The country’s lead economist blamed the fall in foreign reserves on a significant drop in private foreign investment which went from $473 million at September last year to just $147 at the end of last month. CONCESSIONS – Well it seems that the same concessions being given to The Sandals Hotel resort in Barbados will be offered to other local hotels as long as they meet the criteria. LIGHTS OUT – The Barbados Light & Power turned up at Kensington Oval and disconnected the power from outside the property after the bill remained unpaid for a number of months. Sources said that the average monthly bill of the Oval is about $60 000. The historic cricket ground, which is hosting the Tri-Nation Twenty20 Series, had its electricity disconnected for a short time before management scrambled to take care of a reported $400 000 utility bill and avoid international embarrassment. Kensington is the venue for the series that is being played between West Indies, New Zealand and England women’s teams. BEWARE OF BURGLARS - Communities which are deemed affluent are more likely to be targeted by burglars. This has been confirmed by convicted burglars who say they tend to break into houses based on size and look. They observe how the occupants live and dress and also get information from someone familiar with the home. This was revealed yesterday as senior research officer with the National Task Force on Crime Prevention (NTFCP), Kim Ramsay, gave the findings of the national study, Profiling Burglaries In TREASURE BEACH HOTEL, BARBADOS 2006-2011, at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Courtyard by Marriott. In the study, 386 burglary victims and 41 inmates of Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds who make up a third of the prison population incarcerated for burglary, were surveyed. Ramsay said of the 41 inmates, 13 said a burglary was planned in advance and 27 said it was an impulse crime. Thirty said they had an accomplice.
