Been watching The Secret Saturdays recently, and while it's far from a perfect show I have been enjoying it a ton. In part because the characters and plots are really fun. The Saturdays themselves are really great! I wasn't sure if I would like Zak at first, but he's honestly a pretty neat protagonist. I love how he interacts with the other characters and can just be a bit of a loose canon sometimes. Fisk is also really great, I love his expressions and relationship with Zak and the rest of the family.

Doc and Drew are also really nice! I love how well they operate as a couple despite the former being more no-nonsense and the latter being more spontaneous. It's a fun dynamic.

Also my god we collectively moved past V V Argost too quickly. A posh yeti who hosts a tales from the crypt-style show is such a wild concept that I really can't help but love, and he really does just chew the scenery sometimes.

I'll probably have some more thoughts about stuff like the cryptids themselves at some point (because yeah I have thoughts), but for now I just thought it'd be fun to share some basic stuff

Unironically one of my major motivations for doing a PhD is to get an unassailably gender-neutral honorific.

The TMNT and Marvel Super Heroes Universes Beyonds are such a funny contrast to me because for the former you have a set that fumbled hard and accidentally leaked its entire library of rares and mythics, but in the process revealed some genuinely neat cards and showcased a decent building off of magic's existing ninja and mutant synergies, and in the latter you have a set that's carefully and constantly interjecting itself throughout the year to promote what's basically just typal for the two least job-sounding job types in the history of the game

Finally got my shit together enough to ask someone to use not-my-passport-name IRL. Because someone else made a rude comment about 'are you sure that's your name or did it used to be something else?' which I totally get because my passport name is very gendered in a way my whole. Like. Being. Is not, so it was a fair question phrased rudely, but it made me realise that oh I don't actually have to use my passport name in places that don't need to see my passport.

It feels really fucking good to be called by a name that actually fits me apparently??? Who'd have thought.

Like I still have to use the passport name at work and in places where people know my parents (so. like. my whole home country) but apparently I can just. Be Delta and it's actually that easy.

TIL the test cell I designed and wrote procedures for an undergrad team to use at my previous uni is still operational nearly three years (and three teams) later, and has required a grand total upgrade bill of:

Bigger propellant tanks

Upgraded pressure relief valve

New safety shower head (original was made out of a yogurt bucket and a blind cap I took an angle grinder to - for a safety shower that was up to code, cost NZ$500 all up, and took a day and a half to build and commission)

Sometimes I do do good work.

How do you make a fist?

Just thinking back to when the PT I was seeing after some fairly serious hand surgery was like 'okay now make a fist with that hand as far as you can - listen to me, listen, as far as you can without it hurting at all', and then acted surprised when I did that.

So. Do you make a fist the normal way, or some other way? Normal way illustrated below the poll (with the hand that didn't have surgery and with which I can still make a fist, obvi).

Edit: to be clear here, I am talking about the specific hand motion to transition from open-hand to closed-fist, not 'do you put your thumb inside', nobody should do that because that's just fucking stupid.

I think the way I want to try and do superheroes in Slayer x Savior is that they're less crime-fighters and more first responders

Like there are still villains they fight, especially on the more powered/cryptid-exploiting side, but since cryptids themselves have more in common with disasters, natural or otherwise, a lot of the efforts of heroes in countering the anomalous is more towards trying to mitigate damage and divert them. This is also why cryptid researchers like Clint are important since they're both figuring out how to counter cryptid attacks and prevent them in the first place.

Y'know I don't think we talk enough about how conceptually weird power rangers is and how odd it is that we just treat it as something that's normal

Like. There's a whole conversation to be had about early localization of Japanese stuff and how it would usually change things to be more "American" or even censor certain things, but power rangers is such a weird take on "localization" if you would even call it that

I don't think there are any other shows that are literally a show from another country cut up and spliced together with an entirely new plot, completely reworked characters, and entirely new scenes filmed and spliced together with the original ones
