TalkTalk signs up 500,000 customers

TalkTalk’s budget TV service has struck a chord with cost-conscious consumers, with more than 500,000 signing up within the first year of launch. The telecommunications company claimed on Wednesday that it is the UK’s fastest-growing pay-TV service, revealing that it has signed the 500,000th customer to its YouView-powered offering.

“Reaching this milestone in less than a year is a great achievement, but it’s just the beginning,” said Dido Harding, chief executive of TalkTalk. “We remain committed to bringing affordable pay TV to more and more families across the country.”

TalkTalk launched its TV service at the end of September, with customers flocking to take advantage of a free YouView set-top box worth £299 being offered as an incentive to join.

TalkTalk said 75% of its TV customers are upgrading from Freeview and Freesat, which do not have such advanced set-top boxes and are in over 10m UK homes.

BT said that it had a total of 833,000 pay-TV customers at the end of June. Earlier this month, the company said more than 1 million households signed up to its new BT Sport channels.

Sensing the danger from lower-cost rivals, BSkyB announced in July the launch of a £9.99 Now TV set-top box in a bid to entice Freeview households to get the pay-TV habit.
