I have become the kind of Old where I now need help with my computer.
So, I bought an HP Elitebook 840 secondhand; it came with a new charger and a new internal battery. It has been the best laptop I've ever owned for the last year and a half, performing with no problems. When I was home two weeks ago, I was trying to cast from the laptop to my parents' TV, which we'd done before, when it suddenly started signaling that it was on low battery despite being plugged in. The power cord had come loose, so that was legit, but as I was trying to re-seat the power cord, the battery dropped from 19% to 0% in the course of seconds, and the laptop shut down completely.
I haven't been able to power it up since. I'm going to list off what I've tried below the cut, but I'm looking less for hardware solutions than for advice on who to consult next about this.
I've tried letting it charge overnight with the old cord, which might not work (it doesn't have any LED power lights to tell me). I've tried letting it charge overnight with a new cord that I know works, on a different port (a USB-C charger instead of the normal round-port charger; this is a cord I use on my work laptop). I've taken the back off, removed the battery, and tried powering it up with both cords with the battery out; I've inspected and re-seated the battery and tried again with both cords. Nothing.
The laptop has never had LED power indicator lights of any kind (no light-up keyboard, no LED indicator at the power port) so I can't tell if power is getting in but the hard drive is baked, or if the problem is that no power is getting to the battery, or if the problem is that no power is getting through the battery to the hard drive.
The problem is that I don't know what the next step is. Do people take computers to repair shops anymore? Is data recovery still a thing people can pay to have done? Asking HP to have a look at it is not ideal because I don't have any protection plan with them, but I can take a swing at it. I don't know if there's a way to hook up another laptop to the hard drive -- the drive isn't easily removable, and while I have other laptops I could try to connect to it, I don't have that kind of mechanical knowledge, at least not anymore.
I can afford another laptop; in fact when work upgraded my old laptop they let me buy it from them. And I have a somewhat recent backup of the busted one, but it's not complete -- it's missing about a month, and there were some old video files stored on it that aren't backed up anywhere. It will be insanely inconvenient if I have to just write it off, but it won't be tragic. I just would really like to at least pull the data off.
I'm open to suggestions. There are one or two mechanical fixes I've found on various websites that I can still try, but I'm not an electrician or an engineer.
With all my husband's medical woes, pain, and setbacks this year, I want to balance the scales... Help me replace his dying computer, and get him the workhorse machine he deserves for his birthday!

When you need to drop off your tech devices for a repair, how confident are you that they won't be snooped on?
CBC's Marketplace took smartphones and laptops to repair stores across Ontario — including large chains Best Buy and Mobile Klinik — and found that in more than half of the documented cases, technicians accessed intimate photos and private information not relevant to the repair.
Marketplace dropped off devices at 20 stores, ranging from small independent shops to medium-sized chains to larger national chains, after installing monitoring software on the devices. In total, 16 stores were recorded. (At four stores, the tracking software didn't log anything, or the stores didn't appear to turn the devices on.)
Technicians at nine stores accessed private data, including one technician who not only viewed photos but copied them onto a USB key.
"These results are frightening," said Hassan Khan, associate professor in the school of computer science at the University of Guelph. "It's looking through information, searching for data on users' devices, copying data off the device.... it's as bad as it gets."
Context: My laptop broke down a week or two ago and i just thought this could be a funny video on how to check your laptop...tho...it doesn't seem to be that much of a help...isn't it???😅
hey y'all. so last Saturday, my computer seems to have factory reset itself early in the morning while i was asleep. all of my files and all my user settings were wiped and replaced with a completely empty new profile. i've tried restoring it to an earlier point, but the only restoration points showing before the update won't load. i've managed to retrieve a few files here and there using a data recovery program, but pretty much all of my art is irreparably corrupted along with important legal documents and videos i've edited. i'm working hard with the help of some close friends to see if we can restore everything (or mostly everything) to the way it was, but things are looking bleak. leading theory is this was a botched windows 11 update, but we're not sure.
if anyone has any advice on how to fix this issue or has experienced this in the past, please let me know. i'm trying everything i can, but i'm not equipped to troubleshoot this kind of catastrophic issue.
