AFL denies 'racism' tag... again
The AFL has watered down suggestions the code is inherently racist after yet another on-field allegation. Disgraced Western Bulldogs AFL player Justin Sherman will spend four weeks in the Victorian Football League after admitting to racially abusing an indigenous Gold Coast Suns player Joel Wilkinson last weekend - the pair apparently resolved their differences at a reconciliation meeting yesterday. AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou denied racial tensions within the code, adding the footballer had apologised and would now learn his lesson in reserve grade. "Whatever the crime, the greatest punishment you can level on a player is dropping him to second grade," Demetriou said. "We don't have a problem in the AFL with racism - I can tell you that much." But some footballing experts are already questioning whether dropping Sherman to the VFL will help the embattled star deal with his opportunistic racism. "The amount of racism, sexual taunts and derogatory rubbish that gets yelled out at a VFL game is ten times worse than in the AFL, where, for the most part, the environment is controlled and the presence of cameras and microphones keep the players in check," said anti discrimination advocate Peter Marshall. "I predict Sherman will come back to the AFL in four weeks time with a plethora of offensive insults that you only get at grassroots level. A Melbourne Demons player of indigenous heritage told ThePublicApology that when it came to racial insults, he'd "heard them all", but expressed hope that Sherman could bring something new to the table in four weeks time. "A stint in the ressies [reserve grade] will give him a good chance to work on his material," the player said. "I'm sick of the generic "black c***" insult because it's just not creative enough. I hear it every week and I think the white blokes could come up with something better by now; they've been oppressing us [indigenous people] for years and they've had ample time to think up some better taunts." "There's some blokes in the reserves that are coming up with some good stuff at the moment, and I'll be interested to hear some of it later in the year." Sherman told ThePublicApology he'd "keep an ear out for some good ones" at VFL training over the next month. Former St Mirren defender Stelios Demetriou has signed a contract with Ross County.
The Cypriot international helped Saints win promotion to the Premiership last season before being released.
“We are delighted to have signed Stelios,” co-manager Stuart Kettlewell told the Ross County website.[1]
“Steven [Ferguson] and I believe he will play a big part in the coming season largely due to his ability to play in a number of positions.”
Demetriou, 27, spent 18 months at the Paisley side, and becomes County’s fourth signing of the summer as they rebuild following relegation to the Championship.
He joins defenders Callum Morris and Keith Watson,[2] and former Livingston midfielder Josh Mullin.

Defenders Stelios Demetriou and Gary Irvine, midfielder Massimo Donati and striker Darryl Duffy are also released.
“It’s been a fantastic place to play,” said the 34-year-old Sutton, who is in his second two-year spell with the Paisley club.
“It’s going to be a shame, but at the same time I’m looking forward to a new challenge somewhere.”
Manager of year Ross wants more than survival[1]
Sutton has played 21 times this season, scoring twice, but has been mainly used as a substitute as manager Jack Ross turned a side that escaped relegation last season into title winners.
“Last season was strange, because Hibs were in the league and Dundee United were really strong,” said the Englishman, who also won promotion in his first spell with the club.
“We felt we had a good chance with the calibre of players we had, but we just never got it together.
“The young boys have come in and done brilliant.”

Cyprus international Demetriou, who joined from Doxa Katokopias last summer, is among 17 players leaving the Paisley 2021 Stadium and exits after 31 appearances.
Former Dundee full-back Irvine, 33, only played 12 times, while 37-year-old former Celtic midfielder Donati made just a single appearance following his switch from Hamilton Academical in January.
Duffy, the 34-year-old former Hull City and Swansea City striker, played four times for the Buddies this season and ended the season on loan to Airdrieonians, scoring four times in his last six games for the League One side.
Josh Todd, 23, is also released after ending the season on loan to Championship rivals Queen of the South, as are fellow midfielders Darren Whyte, 21, who was on loan to Forfar Athletic, and Nathan Flanagan, 20, who was with East Fife.
Lewis Morgan, the 21-year-old winger sold to Celtic in January but loaned back for the rest of the season, ends his four-year stay with the Paisley club.
Midfielder Mark Hill, who made four appearances on loan from Celtic, and Hearts defender Liam Smith also return to their parent clubs.
Midfielders Conor O’Keefe, Evan Horne and Robbie Leitch, defenders Andrew McDonald and Dylan McKendry, plus goalkeeper Chris Henry, have also departed from St Mirren’s development squad.
