Summary:

His presence is that of the long, cold dark.

Dread is a serpent; coiling, always coiling through you when he willls himself to you. A formless thing, plucked from a void where time has no meaning. Life has no sense.

Priests might rebuke him. The anointed might silence him.

But you will do neither.

He coils into your blood: thick, oozing as you stand opposite the rusted, crusty mirror. Every inch of your skin is bathed in the soft glow of the moon; naked as you’ve ever been, with eyes as black as the darkest sky.

He tests your hands, first. Splays them open and shut, splinting ice under your bones.

“Pretty as a picture,” he hums in your head. “Pretty as the day your God made you. Isn’t that right?”

It sends a pain through your chest; profane, all wrong, to feel his pride at being able to evoke that name without fear of igniting into flames. 

As long as he’s burried within you: he can never be struck down. Not for deaths, nor pain, nor any number of sins.

He is free, and you are trapped.

Worse still, is how much you like it.

“You’re in my head,” you whisper, voice cracking on the inflections. “How are you...?”

“You let me in. Don’t tell me now you’re having second thoughts, Dove.”

His hand ghosts lower, and it’s yours, when he presses in an inch to the wet heat of you. His lips brush your ear, and everywhere your breath swirls; it’s pushed from his lungs.

“And oh: the fun we’ll have.”

The thing with Kylo is.. you never really had a first date. He started showing up in your home (after the first summoning he just decided he liked hanging around) and the two of you became, well… the two of you. You had ventured out a few times before, but mostly just to go shopping or to keep you from going stir crazy, you two had never really “gone out”

Until one afternoon, when you’re sorting through your closet trying to find things to get rid of, and he comes across a particularly pretty thing that he’s sure he’s never seen, 

“Is this new?” 

You glance over your shoulder at him, watching his dark clawed hands run over the delicate fabric “No, pretty old, actually.”

“Why haven’t I seen you in it?”

“When would I have occasion to wear that?” You laugh, and he drops the garment back on your bed, coming up behind you to slide his arms around you as you continue to rifle through the hangers. 

“Just for fun? Or to take some of those self-portraits people your age are so fond of? To make your beloved smile?” 

“I’m not partial to getting dressed up to sit around the house. Why do you think I’m always in sweats?”

“Well then, why don’t we leave the house? We could go to dinner.”

“What, like a date?”

“Precisely. That’s still a thing people do, isn't it?”

“Yeah.. usually a bit earlier in the game, but yeah.”

“It’s settled then. We’re going on a date, tonight.” he stepped away to pick the garment up off the bed and hold it up to your body,  “And you’ll wear this?’ 

You had to smile at him, “Okay, yeah.”

And with that, he disappears. You briefly wonder what kind of preparations someone like him would even need to make. He didn’t seem to need to bathe, though he’d climbed in the shower with you plenty, perhaps he’d polish his horns? No, they’d be hidden for a night out. You pictured him standing in a mirror, admiring his own human form as he tried on different monochromatic outfits

“That sounds about right.”

After finishing as much sorting as you felt like doing that day, you found a sort of growing excitement for the evening’s plans. Not that time with Kylo wasn’t usually exciting, but this was something new, and you hadn’t been taken out on a date in, well.. Longer than you’d like to admit. So you went and showered, got all made up in a way he’d never seen you, and put on the outfit. You’d only worn it once or twice before, on nights out with your friends, and you forgot how nice it made you feel. A grin flashed over your face as you looked in the mirror, was this perhaps how Kylo felt? Knowing how good he looked all the time? 

The doorbell chimed, and you went to the front door mildly confused to see that it was indeed Kylo on the other side

“Oh are we real people today? Like the whole thing?”

There was a smirk on his handsome human face, which looked down on you with appraising dark eyes that ran over your body and settled at your own.

“If you prefer, I can shut the door and simply appear inside.”

“Well we’re already here. What’s that you’re hiding?” you ask, stretching to try and see over his shoulder.

“For you, of course.” Kylo grinned, bringing his arm around to reveal an empty hand, “oh, oops. Here we go.” he said as a bouquet of inky black tulips appeared in his grasp, “You look delicious. Maybe we should skip going out and just let me have you now?”

“Thank you,” You said, kissing him on the cheek, “And no. Just let me get a vase.”

“No need, I’ll get it.” and they disappeared from your hand only to reappear on the hall table, vase and all.

“Kylo, did you steal a car?”

“What would give you that impression?”

You stood in front of the impossibly fancy car, eyebrows raised, “Can you even drive?”

“You really have so little faith in me?”

“I don’t think you’re allowed to use the word faith.”

“Get in, we can find out together.”

The drive to the restaurant was relatively uneventful, the car appeared to be driving itself as his hand was creeping up your thigh most of the time and he didn’t seem to need to look at the road. You reach out and pinch the back of his hand at one point,

“Dinner first, then dessert.”

When you arrive at the restaurant he doesn’t even open his car door, simply appearing beside your door before your seatbelt is even off. His hand is hot against yours, and you suddenly find yourself with butterflies in your stomach. How silly, you think, like I haven't had dinner with him a hundred times already. Why am I nervous now?

“Try not to look so miserable, my love.” He whispers as he holds the door open for you. 

“I’m not. Just…” the rest of your response was lost as you took in the interior of your destination. The whole place glowed with warm coppery light, the room was filled with intimate little tables and booths clearly not intended to hold parties bigger than two. It seemed to be the very definition of a romantic restaurant, and you wondered if the place even actually existed prior to him bringing you here. 

“Reservation for Ren.” he said to the woman waiting behind the front desk, your ears perked up at this and as she led you back to your table you slid your arm through his and leaned in to whisper to him,

“Mister Ren? That’s new.”

“New to you, perhaps.”

Once you’re seated and can properly look at him,the mischievous twinkle in Kylo’s eye really begins to stand out. You stare him down, chin resting on your hand

“Something the matter, sweetling?”

“How much of this is real?”

“Depends on your definition of real.”

You make a face, “Kylo.”

“(Y/N).” he grins, mimicking your tone, “It’s all real, my love. I wouldn’t play a trick on you.”

“Yes you would.”

“Fine. But this isn’t one. The restaurant is real, the people in it too, and the food, if you can believe.” His hand reaches out for yours across the table, and you pray the waiter doesn’t notice as little sparks jump from his fingertips to yours. The heat from them spreads up your arm blooming across your chest in a blush. You can see him watching it’s progress as he orders a bottle of wine. Pink creeps up your cheeks as well,

“I know what you’re doing,” you say when the man leaves, “don’t you think I’m having a fine time on my own?”

“Maybe.” he shrugs, sips his water, “You looked a little tense, is it the restaurant or me making you nervous?”

“I don’t know. I’m not exactly used to things like this.”

“We could do it more often, I have been keeping you rather hidden away lately.”

“I don’t mind that bit.” You admit, a slight smile returning, “it doesn’t have to be this fancy every time, okay?”

“Fine, next week we’ll hit a drive through. Get something nice and greasy?”

“Sounds like a deal. Also don’t even think about doing that shitty guy thing where you order for me, or we’ll be throwing hands.”

“Noted.” 

The food is suspiciously delicious. You decide this when the mushroom soup that prefaced your entree managed to taste like a walk in the woods on a crisp spring morning and also somehow like cuddling up on a winter’s night. Kylo caught your gaze and winked at you over his wine glass. 

His eyes seemed to burn into you all through dinner, indecisive whether to fix on the span of your exposed collarbone or move up to your own to tease you further with his looks. He plays innocent the whole time, as though you can’t feel the aura of his power all around you, brushing up your spine and tickling the back of your neck. You feel as though you might cry out when the invisible pressure slides over your thigh and inward, and give him a pleading look.

“Don’t you want to finish your dinner before you go for dessert?”

“I thought I’d take some home. Are you finished?”

“Yes,” you chuckle and shake your head at him. 

“Excellent.” Kylo leans forward and grips your hand. Before you even have time to gasp about it you find yourself not only home, but already in your room and being led backward to the bed by Kylo as he attacks your neck, “This whole off the shoulder thing is far too distracting” he growls. Your hands are tangling in his hair as you protest, “What about the restaurant?”

“Not to worry, sweet thing, a very polite projection of us is paying and driving that car back to the lot I stole it from.” He’s already working on your dress, trying to decide if he should pull it up or just push it straight down off your arms.

“Oh, I knew it!” You make the decision for him and tug it down, aiding in the downward path of his burning mouth.

“It’s fine. Let me see how many times I can get you off before dessert gets cold.”

It isn’t until much later that you notice the little box on your bedside table, a still warm fruit tart waiting inside, and two forks.

chapter two

There is no arguing with the Dark Lord of Hell, so Kylo finds himself in the largest city of the Takodana quadrant shortly before dusk. Snoke – of course – is right; magic permeates the air as Kylo steps out of the crumbling brick façade of the building his portal dumped had him. Naturally the scent of magic is always stronger where covens exist – this might be Maz’s territory but Kylo also scents the sickly-sweet smell of fae magic. It’s enough to put him on edge.

Something else in the air makes his blood practically sing though; it’s strong, sweet, spicy and bright. It’s power croons like a sirens song. Kylo knows – just knows – that when he finds the source, he’ll have Snoke’s answer.

“Where is it?” he mumbles as he casts a shadow spell upon himself.
