Inspired by Mikhail Lermontov's poem "The Demon", this haunting illustration depicts a solitary winged figure soaring above the rugged Caucasus Mountains beneath a pale moon. Zichy's dramatic use of light and shadow evokes a powerful sense of melancholy, exile, and supernatural mystery, capturing the tragic spirit of one of Russian literature's most enduring characters.
