Demon marvin boi!
Bonus:
A Curse
Summary: Even though Marvin knew the risks of purchasing old spellbooks from shady magic shops, he’s been desperate to learn some new tricks..even if they involve something considered taboo to him.
But as it turns out..he gets way more than he bargained for.
“Okay..what secrets do you have for me, hmm?” Marvin hummed in thought as he set the spellbook on his desk, blowing the dust off of it before he sat down and scooted the chair in.
The book must have been at least a few centuries old, as the cover was faded, and he could clearly see some missing pages, torn pages, and..even pages stuffed into it.
Was it the right decision to buy this from some shady magic shopkeeper? Maybe. But he learned that sometimes the dull and “unloved” books held many surprises and powerful spells that other magicians might seek.
Fortunately, Marvin is one who never judged books by their covers, especially in a literal sense.
Smiling, he opened it, brushing off a few bits of dust as he looked at the yellowing pages. Interestingly enough, there were a few notes on each page, which marked the spells as either “safe”, “dangerous”, or “dark”. There were only a few in the third category, so he wasn’t too worried about those.
Though none of them truly caught his eye...
Until he flipped to a page showing a transformation spell.
“Oooooh, this looks interesting!” He read the passage, learning that the spell would turn a user into a powerful entity with abilities based around illusions.
Marvin knew very well of his obsession with mastering illusions and whatnot, since as of late he felt like his shows were...lacking new tricks.
Maybe this spell would help wow his audience this Halloween! And maybe he can even play a few tricks on that glitch demon as the perfect karma for all he’s done to him over the years.
‘Yeah. This’ll do perfectly.’
..........
Almost immediately after trying out the transformation spell, Marvin could sense that something was horribly, horribly wrong.
But it was much too late to back out of it, as he looked to see his skin turning a d rk-gray color with what appeared to be furs gradually replacing his normal hairs. His eyes widened as it crept down to his fingers, and he cried in pain as claws began ripping through his fingernails, pieces of them falling to the floor.
Then the pain shot to his tailbone as he looked and saw two gray tails emerge from underneath his cape. In a panic, he tore it off and looked to see they were conjoined at the base, but they split off into two and began lashing individually.
With a deep growl he wasn’t expecting to make, he limped over to the mirror to gaze at his reflection. And the revelation was stunning:
His eyes and tattoo markings were now a glowing blue. And his hair was also frazzled, with blue highlights and dark gray cat ears peeking out. Interestingly enough, there were black cat whiskers, which he curiosity tugged on and winced when they hurt.
“O-Oh no..” Gasping, he clamped a hand over his mouth, before he tensed upon hearing a knock on the door.
“Marvin? You alright? I heard you screaming.”
“G-Go away! I’m fine!” He whispered, hoping you’d leave him be while he tried to figure out what had happened.
“Can I come in? Just to be sure?”
Marvin just shook his head, tears welling in his eyes. “Y-You won’t like what you see, [y/n]. I-I..I don’t know if I’m safe to be around.”
He heard you sigh on the other side of the door. “Marv, I trust you, okay? I know you won’t hurt me-”
“B-But..I don’t know if...if...” He tried to argue, though he lost any will left in him to fight back, so he sniffled and grabbed his cape. Then he climbed onto his bed and curled up, hiding his face as he flicked his hand to the door, allowing it to open.
As you entered his room, you immediately saw the glowing blue flames that seemed to be on..a pair of tails? You smiled and walked over to the quivering lump on the bed, sitting beside him. “C’mon, you turned yourself into a kitty? That’s nothing compared to--”
Marvin abruptly tossed the cape aside, staring at you with tear-streaked cheeks as he let you take in his full form. You were stunned to see his transformation, but the look in your eyes wasn’t from fear but....fascination.
“Oh, wow..is this a demon..?” You reached out to touch his cheek, though your hand just went right through him.
“Wha..” Blinking, you saw his body flicker and vanish before your very eyes. “Where did you go-?”
“I-It was suppose to turn me into a master of illusions..but I think I gave myself a demonic curse instead. I used a dark spell.”
You looked over your shoulder, surprised to see Marvin there, huddled in the corner. With a frown you got up and walked over to him, kneeling down. “Are you the real Marvin?”
He nodded and hiccuped, wiping his eyes. “I-I never should’ve bought that stupid, tattered book..I fucking missed something a-and now it’s gonna cost my body and my mind-”
“Hey, easy now..let me ask you something first..” You put a hand on his shoulder. “Do you feel like you’re fighting off some corruption in your head?”
For a moment he was silent, before he shook his head. “N-No..but that’s not-”
“Maybe you unknowingly used a dark spell, but...you’re still you. Maybe it’s only a physical transformation. And besides, didn’t you say that..dark magic users typically grew stronger and more corrupt as they learn new spells?”
“..you were actually listening to me?” He blinked in surprise.
You nodded and smiled. “I’ve taken note of a few things the others say in case things..go south. So yeah. But you don’t use dark magic as much so...maybe it’s not affecting you beyond this.”
“Oh, well..I-I never even considered that.” Marvin sighed in relief, before he looked at his claws. “Well..I guess as long as I don’t go overboard with my powers, I should be fine.” Then he gazed at you with a smile. “Thank you, [y/n].”
“Of course.” You smiled, taking his hands. “Let’s go see the others. I’m sure they’ll be in awe at your new form.”
He chuckled. “Maybe. Only one way to find out, right?”
