Demon Dark, the original plan
Many years ago when I was in middle school I brainstormed writing a story with my then good friend Teresa. We were both outcasts, me being gay and no-racial, her being overweight and a free thinker - so we naturally bonded and fanatasized about what it would be like for us to have "power". It's translated somehow into good vs evil, angels and demons - probably because we both struggled with our own concepts of the religion and what we were constantly preached to about it from those we loved. In the end, for me, the story became more about the birth of a villain (depending on your perspective). I saw the potential to write about how a good person can become evil from society's viewpoint... Because that's what Teresa and I mostly fantasized about - being just as mean and ruthless to the bullies as they had been to us... Yet she and I were better natured individuals. This character arc I recently saw in a movie called "Chronicle", much to my dismay. Originally, or as far back as I care to remember, Demon Dark followed a teenage boy struggling with finding his place in the world, his meaning. He had few friends and fewer comforts in life and he exhibited signs of schizophrenia which lead to an even greater feeling of isolation. Eventually, the boy begins to see things that he describes as demons; they haunt him. He has a few violent outbreaks as a result of what he believes he is seeing and bullies make fun of him, exasperating his hate for life. As his "condition" worsens, he begins to hurt himself - to the extent of gauging out his own eyes, so as to not see anything anymore - which leads him to a startling realization... He isn't crazy and the demonic nightmares he is having are real. The boy learns that he is a gateway to hell and that his existence will unleash hell's greatest demons on earth. Having learned his "purpose" and despite his hate for most of the people he interacted with, the boy attempts suicide to close the gateway. But, it was a failed attempt leaving the boy unconscious but alive - the perfect doorway; which resulted in part two of the story. Much of the story is unchanged, actually, but you can see where my mind was at the time I wrote it. Demon Dark is as much a journey into my past and dark feelings as it is a fantasy story. There were, of course, other elements at play. For one, the main character was actually an angel reincarnated - he and others were referred to as Sovereigns and they were very powerful, if their consciousness ever was to woken up. Then there was a great demon that escapes from the boy through an amulet given to him to seal the gateway that didn't work, in fact it did the inverse - that demon possessed a newborn baby in the hospital where the main character was taken and sought to kill the main character so as to keep himself (the demon) as the dominant being on earth. My new storyline involves more groups and sub groups with their hands at play. We'll see how it turns out - now that I'm sharing it.
The makings of Demon Dark (working title)
I was reminded today, inexplicably, about unfinished projects in my personal life that I should tend to. One of which is a project I have worked on for many years, changing and trading out ideas as I saw some ideas come to life in movies on the big screen and never wanted to be compared to those...
I made a new year's resolution to at least have a rough draft of my story, Demon Dark, by the year's end. Here I am half-way through the year and I have barely touched it since Michael left. Seems he took a lot of my motivation with him... but I am resolved to complete it tonight (especially since I am not taking classes for the rest of this year).
Sooo... as a part of my new motivation - I will be using Tumblr to put up information on Demon Dark as I move forward in it's completion. The plan - to have a script for a graphic novel by January 1, 2014. Before that I need to completely revise the overall story-plot, character arcs and so on... I planned it to be a serious novel with character development as the primary drive and being a 3-part series: Alpha, Mu, Omega.
Keep tabs and see how the story progresses as it unfolds here. :)
