APaHD sketches + Sunnyside OCs
Sketches of Lady Ruslana. Her lore has changed somewhat, though her presentation remains the same. She is obsessed with turning humans into bloodless mannequins. She can bend reality and such.
King of Sheol sketchesĀ ā heās essentially a snazzy, speakeasy-style Epstein character who represents demonic good masking evil. In a way, each demon represents that idea.
Ruslana is a being of pure sin. She does not hide it and, in many ways, is quite valid in her thinking. She is a creature of malice who lives in a lightless, ruined monastery. She is a beast who desires control above all else.
Astra is a being of redemption and healing. She is happy and caring and shows Fiya, the titular demon, as well as Father Jeremiyah, the titular priest, that demons are capable of being good people. She lives in a woodland cottage and is associated with the light of the outdoors.
The King of Sheol is a major member of a crime syndicate and owns a subterranean pleasure den where demon and man can convene and lose themselves. He carries the veneer of goodness ā of āthis is where you belong, where youāre acceptedā ā but he is a creature of demented appetites all the same. He dwells beneath the earth, a place typically lightless, illuminated only by the false lights of his club.

These are Sunnyside sketches of Isabella, the haunted doll, and Noriko, the university student. BothĀ A Priest and His Demon (APaHD)Ā andĀ SunnysideĀ are my friendās projects. He described Sunnyside as a place haunted by all manner of horrors, yet you could technically live your life there without experiencing a single thing. We work together here and there, and this is my attempt at creating a main character for hisĀ SunnysideĀ project:
Noriko is the granddaughter of Edward Brookwood. She is now a university student in Sunnyside. She possesses a strange cameo that belonged to her grandfather, which is connected to the Brookwood family, all of whom died in a series of mysterious tragedies. She is staying at a hotel and slowly making her way through the town, meeting locals, while an organization nestled within the town keeps a close eye on her as a newcomer.
Useless notes: She can speak some Italian ā enough to get by conversationally with a man she fell in love with in college. Her earrings are a minimalist depiction of a tree made of emerald, which she received as a birthday gift. Her father died in a strange way when she was young. She had a supernatural encounter as a child, though she dismisses it as a dream.
Oh, she was born in Japan, but her grandfather Edward came from Sunnyside, Canada, so sheās about a quarter American.
Strangely enough, she likes the mountain scenery but does not trust the feeling it seems to imbue. She has an affinity for strange things ā ghosts and the like.
Isabella is the spirit of a woman who came to inhabit a child-sized doll after a botched attempt by an occultist to place his own daughterās soul into the vessel. She is confused out of her mind, but she does not let her new (or rather, old) body diminish her lively attitude. Over time, she and Noriko will grow close, almost like sisters.
Possesion horror not as in āoh god Iām in the vehicle that is my body but someone else is behind the wheelā but as in āoh god how much of that was me? was the entity just letting me do what I always wanted to do anyway? I want to believe the cruelty was all the demon but what if it was just the parts of myself the demon unburied?ā

Talk to Me: screened at the 2023 Sundance film festival, with overwhelming positive feedback from viewers and critics. This is the directorial debut for the Philippou brothers, who started their career with the Australian YouTube channel RackaRacka.
The trailer is subtle in contrast to other mainstream horror title trailers. It is both unnerving without showcasing multiple jumpscares. Personally, I have not been as excited about a horror film since The Witch. I look forward to catching this gem in the summer.
