I Can Feel You Behind My Eyes - Sam/Ruby (drabble)
The heavy sound of the warehouse door sliding open, and then closed announced her presence before she even breathed a word, but she didn't have to. Blind or not, he always knew it was her, and he was on his feet a moment later, staring straight at her despite not being able to see with an accusatory expression on his face.
"Where've you been?" The demon blood was making him quick to agitation, but Ruby brushed his annoyance off easily, and shook the plastic bags in her hands and around her arms to rustle them, letting him know she came bearing gifts.
"Shopping. The last thing we need is you getting caught breaking into people's houses to steal their candles and raid their spice cabinet, Sam." The spray paint run had made her nervous enough, and he was only sneaking into people's garages then. "Especially when you'd probably trip over their coffee table trying to run out the front door."
Sam snorted. "We? You disappear without a word for two months, come back, and now you're all about teamwork? Thanks, but no thanks, Ruby. I can do this myself."
The brief look of hurt that flashed across her face made her glad he couldn't see it right now, and with a deep breath to stave off her irritation, the demon softened and set the bags down on the concrete floor near the demon trap, kneeling next to it so she could swap out the burned down candles for the new ones. "Look, I know I'm not exactly your favorite person right now, but can you pretend for five minutes that I'm genuinely trying to help you here? Jesus, you're blind for half the day, spend all of your time draining demons the other half, and in case you've forgotten, the police think you've died... what, three times now?" Rolling her eyes, she replaced the last candle before folding her legs up underneath her as she sat, quirking an unseen eyebrow up at him.
"Pretty sure they're not gonna buy it a fourth time if they catch you creeping into Grandma Moses' pantry to steal her rosemary. And it's not like you're gonna see some car barreling toward you while you're crossing the street. So unless you've got an angel up your sleeve who can save your ass that you're not telling me about, I'd like to spare you the whole getting arrested or killed thing, if that's alright with you. Can't save the world if you're rotting in the ground or some cell, you know."
And with that, Ruby looked away, dragging over another bag filled with different ingredients for summoning to start pulling them out. There was a silence that crept in between them for a moment that she paid no attention to, keeping herself occupied with emptying the bag because it was all too easy for her to imagine the annoyed face he was making without needing see it. But then he went and caught her off guard, his own voice void of the irritation that was there before, but still holding onto a bit of soft sarcasm as he spoke.
"Right. Because you care so much about what happens to the world... or me." And that was enough to get her back on her feet, the contents of her shopping bags forgotten as she walked toward him, pushing herself up onto her toes as she reached up to brush her fingers through his shaggy hair. Her expression grew softer and almost sad for him as she raked them through his brown locks soothingly, because she knew what this was really about.
She wished it could've been different. Wished things could've happened the easy way, without the angels getting involved, without an apocalypse having to unfold... without having to betray and shatter his trust in her. But that was then, and this was now, and the demon was determined to make sure that he knew she was in this with him until the very end this time. Beyond it, even, without all of the secrets and tricks up her sleeve. This time, she wouldn't have to hurt him... wouldn't have to lose him. They could do this together, if only he'd let her in again.
"Of course I care, Sammy. I came back to you, didn't I?" she asked, sliding her hand down to cup his face, her thumb brushing across his cheek. "And I keep coming back to you. Because it's you, Sam. It's always--" She trailed off, unable to stop herself from wondering just when it was that she'd gotten so damn attached to him--to the point where it actually pained her to know that things might never go back to the way they were before. Back to the way things were when she'd been someone he could turn to no matter what, rather than someone not even worthy of a hello, let alone his trust.
Still, she had to try. The only way this would work was if he believed she was only trying to help this time, rather than hiding some ulterior motive. So she sighed softly to herself and then leaned up further on her toes, hand slipping down to curl around his neck to pull him closer so she could ghost her lips gently against his own. "I'm sorry, Sam," she whispered, the honesty of the words shaking her to the core as they fell against his mouth. It probably wasn't what he wanted to hear, but it was the only thing she had to say, and finally, she eased herself back down onto the soles of her feet, hand resting on his warm chest for a moment before she moved to pull away completely.
But then... "Ruby..." And strong fingers curled around her wrist, holding her in place. The demon turned to look at him, watching as uncertain eyes tried their best to focus on her undoubtedly blurry face, her own expression puzzled and expectant for whatever was coming next--except there was no way she could've expected what actually came next as he squeezed her wrist, his face softening into the vaguest hint of a smile. "Thanks."
And though she was curious, Ruby didn't dare ask what he exactly he was thanking her for. Maybe he sensed her sincerity and it was for the apology... or maybe it was just for the candles... either way, she didn't care. It was a start. A step in the right direction, and she shifted her wrist a bit to get him to let go of it before taking his hand in hers instead, lacing their fingers together as she led him toward the shopping bags so they could unpack them together.
