Hi yes I am still shook
18 August 2018: Denver, CO
The day that Misha Collins endorsed both #DecadeofDestiel and #DecadeofCockles by simply acknowledging the progression/representation of both of those ships & saying he loves it.
does this concern you FangasmSPN/status/1031303624561909765?s=19
So this is regarding both Fandom Twitter (which I keep away from as much as possible because it’s a dumpster fire), as well as Things Said At Cons (which I also keep away from as much as possible because people don’t understand how to apply Reality Filters and Context to those statements).
The tweet in question:
https://twitter.com/fangasmspn/status/1031303624561909765?s=19
And the text of the tweet for those who don’t wanna click the thing:
Yes @jarpad and @JensenAckles want a vote at the table about how the show ends. They’ve invested too much. #SPNDEN
This is the only mention I’ve heard of this, I haven’t seen the panel video for myself (and don’t really care anyway, so nobody needs to send me links or anything). So I have no authority to comment on this as to what it really means in the larger scheme of what they were discussing in that particular panel.
That said, these guys have said a lot of conflicting things at panels over the years, ranging from “there’s reasons we’re not writers!” kinds of jokes about how they be terrible at plotting the show, all the way to their personal headcanons for the future. So… what they say at cons varies A LOT depending on how they’re feeling that day, the sorts of questions leading up to the “endgame” question, the general mood of the audience, what else is on their minds lately… I mean, there’s the context that we have to consider based on the con itself.
Then there’s the reality of Jensen and Jared in the larger machine that creates Supernatural. They are actors, paid to act. They’re not writers, they’re not producers. Yes, it’s understood that they care deeply about their characters and the larger story they’re part of, and yes they know these guys have been playing these characters from the start and know them very well… but…
The writers and showrunners are ultimately the people steering this bus, you know? Jensen and Jared have to trust in them to a degree to even be able to continue making the show in the first place, and the story is still unfolding. None of us (including Jensen, Jared, and the rest of the production staff) have a definitive idea of where that story will eventually end yet. I mean… They’re working on an “it runs until it’s done” kind of mentality right now, and haven’t set a concrete endpoint that they’re actively writing toward.
Yes, Dabb may have ideas about how it should eventually all resolve, but the story is actively still happening right now. We don’t know what the mechanics of the narrative arcs leading into that final run of episodes (or even the final season as a whole) will be focused on yet.
But will Jensen and Jared’s (and even Misha’s) thoughts and feelings be considered before setting off on the final road toward endgame? Probably. Because they ARE important to the story.
But EVERYONE involved with this show is equally passionate about it, you know? None of them want to screw over the characters in the run up to the endgame. The final season of this show has the power to make or break its 14 (or 15 or 16 or who even knows) plus seasons worth of legacy. NOBODY involved wants it to end poorly, you know?
So, back to the tweet (and the comment). On one level, I’m just gonna say, “Well, duh!” because of course EVERYONE involved with the show is going to have emotional reactions to the creation of the last run of episodes. I’m sure there will be meetings, plans, and group decisions that will be made between writers/showrunners/producers/directors/actors/crew… EVERYONE will be affected by this and actively involved with it, because it means so much to ALL of them.
But on another level, I’m just gonna say… the writers are the ones writing the story here, and they haven’t even come close to writing this bit yet. So it’s essentially a meaningless sentiment at this point.
And finally, as to whether or not this concerns me? Of course it doesn’t. I mean, why would it? Ultimately, it’s conwaffle, and as I feel about ALL conwaffle? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(eta: not conwaffle, but a legit interview at Paleyfest, and a far more factual state of affairs than conwaffle: https://variety.com/2018/tv/news/supernatural-jensen-ackles-jared-padalecki-producers-season-13-1202731211/)
